The Washington Wizards went only seven deep tonight as they continue to battle a rash of injuries. Despite the inconvenience, John Wall and Marcin Gortat put up monster games as the Wizards were able to defeat the Sacramento Kings on Monday night, 113-99.

This was the first time the Wizards have won consecutive games since mid-November when they won three-straight contests.

John Wall continued to carry this depleted Wizards squad as he racked up another double-double with 12 points, 19 assists and four steals. Wall’s assist total tonight was a career-high, and it was the most assists by a Washington point guard since 1998 when Rod Strickland dished out 20.

There is no denying that Wall was the leader on the floor tonight, but it was Marcin Gortat who kept laying down the hammer tonight. The Wizards center finished with 27 points on 12-of-19 shooting, 16 rebounds and four blocks. Garrett Temple started once again for the injured Bradley Beal, and he didn’t disappoint as he recorded a career-high 23 points, knocking down five three-pointers in the process.

Even though there was only a few of them tonight, the “other guys” for Washington really stepped up. Ramon Sessions and Kris Humphries were the only two guys to come off the bench and they tallied 15 points apiece. Jared Dudley had 13 points and Kelly Oubre added eight points and six rebounds.

The Kings were led by their big man DeMarcus Cousins who finished with 22 points and eight rebounds. Rudy Gay added 16 points and seven rebounds, while Rajon Rondo struggled with only two points, nine assists and four turnovers.

Sacramento was on the second night of a back-to-back, but it didn’t show early on. After the first quarter they led the Wizards 35-34, as they were doing a great job of rebounding on the offensive glass that led to plenty of second chance points. Washington shot the ball lights out all night long, and after the first half of play they led Sacramento, 63-59.

The Wizards were in complete control in the third quarter and looked like they could start to run away with it heading into the fourth quarter. However, the Kings showed a little fight as they ended the quarter on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 84. Washington would flip the script to start the fourth as they went on an 8-0 run, thanks to some three-point shooting. At the 7:35 mark, the Wizards would end the game on a 17-7 run, 10 of those points coming from the energized Garrett Temple.

Aside from losing the rebound advantage, the Wizards had the advantage in just about every statistical category. Washington finished the game shooting 50.6 percent from the field and 58.3 percent from behind the arc (14-of-24), while Sacramento shot 40.7 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from behind the arc (7-of-22).

Another thing the Wizards did so well tonight was capitalize on turnovers. The Kings turned the ball over 15 times which led to 15 Washington points, while the Wizards turned it over 11 times that led to only four Sacramento points.

Even though the Kings are not a power in the Western Conference, what makes this an impressive win for Washington is the fact they played hard on both sides of the ball despite not being anywhere near full strength. The starters are having to play close to 40 minutes a night out of necessity but are still finding the energy to make the necessary effort to win games, as they try and hold their head above water until reinforcements show up.

The Wizards will host the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night, while the Kings will stay on the road to face the Indiana Pacers on the same night.
