Free agent forward Austin Daye and the Cleveland Cavaliers have reached an agreement on a one-year, training camp deal, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports.

Daye, 27, has been journeying the league the last couple of years, most recently splitting the 2014-2015 season with the San Antonio Spurs and Atlanta Hawks.

For the Hawks, Daye showed up in only eight games, averaging 3.3 points and 1.8 rebounds on 9.5 minutes of play. With the Spurs, he played 26 games and received four starts while averaging 4.0 points and 2.3 rebounds on 10.3 minutes per contest.

Daye has also spent time with the Toronto Raptors, Memphis Grizzlies, and Detroit Pistons. Since his days with the Pistons, his production, along with his play time, has dwindled, making it difficult for the six-year veteran to find guaranteed deals.

With the Cavaliers, he can perhaps serve as a third string backup if he makes the roster. Unfortunately, Cleveland is awfully deep at the small forward position, unless the team decides to use Daye as a stretch four.

Currently, the Cavaliers possess 12 guaranteed and five non-guaranteed contracts, but J.R. Smith is expected to have his contract guaranteed soon, leaving two available roster spots.

One of those spots is, of course, reserved for Tristan Thompson, who continues to negotiate with the organization but is still $14 million apart from his desired salary. With training camp looming, the Cavs and Thompson will look to intensify talks to make something happen.

Therefore, Daye may end up battling four others – D.J. Stephens, Quinn Cook, Jared Cunningham, and Nick Minnerath – for the final roster spot on the Cavaliers.

The 6-foot-11, 220-pound forward out of Gonzaga was the 15th overall selection by the Detroit Pistons in 2009. He has career averages of 5.2 points and 2.6 rebounds.
