On Saturday morning, the mixed martial arts community was once again privy to a UFC Fight Night taking place during the day. In the main event from the Phillipines, we saw what is being deemed as a superfight between Urijah Faber (32-8) and Frankie Edgar (19-4-1). With two guys who can match each other equally in the wrestling, we knew the stand up would come into to play to determine a winner. Frankie was able to win all five rounds with a combination of volume and timely knee picks to pull off the victory. Gegard Mousasi man handled Costas Philippou in route to his thirty-seventh victory in mixed martial arts. Both the main and co-main event were great fights but the night clearly belonged to the now returning Mark Munoz who went out in classic fashion. It was a great morning to grab some coffee and eat some pancakes, eggs and bacon and enjoy some top flight cage fighting.

One of the most intriguing factors in the fight between Frankie Edgar and Urijah Faber at UFC Fight Night 66, is what a victory could do to each fighter. For Faber, it could mean that he could possibly have one more run at featherweight gold while for Edgar it certifies his contender status as next in line. Through five rounds, the fighters matched each others pace and intensity with Frankie gaining a slight edge in each round. The wrestling was neutralized by the two but Edgar was able to get a few picks and place Urijah on his back while avoiding the guillotine. To the casual fan, it may have not been the most entertaining fight but to the avid viewer, they were able to watch a very technical display. In the end Edgar outlasted Faber for the unanimous decision and we will have to see if he is really next in line for the winner of Aldo - McGregor.

Gegard Mousasi (37-5) in one of those situations where we aren't sure if he is helming gatekeeper duties or is a bonafide contender. He took on Costas Philippou (13-5) who now seems to be on the declining side of the middleweight division. After a nice win against Lorenz Larkin, he was outmatched in each round and category against Gegard. Where as we knew the striking would be key for both fighters and Moussai implored a great takedown and ground game to work his way to victory. In the middleweight division it is a wait and see game but this is another solid win for Gegard which has us feeling he is closer to contender status then the other aforementioned.

No one will enjoy the ride of victory for this card more than Mark Munoz (14-6). While he is not retiring with a belt, it’s hard to deny that he is still going out on top. He pulled off an unanimous victory over Luke Barnatt (8-3) in his final trip to the octagon. He won the fight in classic Munoz fashion by getting under the range of the longer fighter to complete his takedowns. Mark ate a few good shots from Luke but pressed on to close the distance and execute his gameplan. In the second and third rounds, Munoz landed a few great overhand rights to show he was in full control of how this fight was going. He ended the night in a position of ground and pound which was a perfect way to go out for his successful career. With family and friends watching, Mark was able to finish his UFC journey in a fashion that we think all would be satisfied with.

The plight of Neil Magny (15-3) continued with a second round finish over Hyun Gyu Lim (13-5). The two had a very exciting first round, exchanging blows that at one point sent Magny to the mat. He was able to regroup and finish the round off strong which he used to carry him into the second round. There he was able to mount the back of Lim late and finished him with a vicious ground and pound to prompt the referee stoppage. It seems clear that now is the time to give Magny a top guy in the division to really see where he is at but you cannot deny the great run his has been on.

In the opening bout Phillipe Nover (10-5) out wrestled Yui Chul Nam (18-5) on his way to hard fought split decision. Each fighter won a round apiece with nice execution but Nover was able to get the edge and win a somewhat controversial victory. It seemed as if Nam was in control in the later rounds but didn't do enough to persuade otherwise.

Up next for the UFC is UFC 187 from Las Vegas on May 23rd. It features a battle for the now vacate light heavyweight title between Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson with a co-main for the middleweight title between Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort.
