Martina Trevisan caused yet another upset at the French Openknocking off fifth seed Kiki Bertens 6-4, 6-4 in their fourth round match on Court Suzanne Lenglen. The Italian becomes the 10th qualifier to reach the last eight in tournament history and recorded her first victory over a top ten player.

Trevisan stuns Bertens to claim quarterfinal berth

Three holds started the match and Trevisan had triple break point, only needing one chance to convert when Bertens double faulted. Showing a strong serve, the Italian won 10 of her first 12 points on her delivery and it helped her to a 4-1 lead.

A 12-point game ended when the fifth seed was unable to handle an overhead from Trevisan and the world number 159 led 5-1. Bertens roared back, claiming three games in a row on the strength of her forehand to reduce the deficit to 5-4.

Facing a set point, Bertens whipped a crosscourt forehand for a winner, but given a second chance, Trevisan ended a lengthy rally with a sublime drop shot to win the first set. She broke to take a 2-0 lead in the second set after another long rally.

Everything was going the Italian's way as she sealed another hold with a crosscourt forehand to stretch her lead to 3-0. Bertens once again made a comeback, getting back on serve after an untimely double fault by Trevisan.

The Italian was now under pressure, facing three break points, but she used her stellar volleying skills and a strong serve to erase those chances and hold for a 4-3 edge. That proved to be decisive as she thumped a backhand winner on break point to go in front 5-3.

Once more, Bertens made one last charge, breaking to restore parity, but a double fault gave Trevisan three match points and although the Dutchwoman saved the first two, she was powerless to a perfect lob winner that saw the world number 159 continue her dream run.
