World number one Serena Williams has shrugged off fears of a shoulder problem that hampered her performance at the Rio Olympics and the six-time US Open champion has been playing scintillating tennis in New York so far.

Yaroslava Shvedova is no stranger to reaching the latter stages of Grand Slam tournaments as she made the quarterfinals of Wimbledon this year losing to Williams' sister Venus and reached the quarterfinals of the French Open twice losing to former world number one Jelena Jankovic and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in 2010 and 2012.

The world number one hasn't won the US Open since 2014, and she suffering a heartbreaking loss to Roberta Vinci in the semifinals last year, that halted her chances of completing the Calendar Year Grand Slam.

Shvedova is a hard-hitter and the Kazakh will relish this challenge of facing Williams at the US Open once again.

Williams has made more history at this year's US Open by winning her 307th Grand Slam singles match which is an Open Era record in the women's game and 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer has won the same amount.

How they got here

The 22-time Grand Slam champion began her US Open campaign against 2014 semifinalist Ekaterina Makarova, which could have been a tricky opener for the American, however, Williams passed her toughest test in flying colours with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the dangerous lefty.

However, in the second round, Williams was erratic in her second round match with compatriot Vania King but came through that match unscathed winning 6-3, 6-3.

In the third round, the American breezed past Sweden's Johanna Larsson dropping only three games in the process with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 scoreline.

Shvedova currently ranked at 52 in the world has equally been impressive, floating under the radar, and despite being unseeded she has not faced a seeding opponent and has not dropped a set like Williams throughout these Championships.

The Kazakh thrashed Spain's Lara Arraubarrena 6-2, 6-3 and she followed this up with a loss of one game against Wang Qiang 6-0, 6-1, and the Chinese player defeated 23rd seed Daria Kasatkina in the previous round.

Shvedova took advantage of 2011 US Open champion Sam Stosur's second round departure at the hands of this year's Australian Open quarterfinalist Zhang Shuai, and once again, the former world 25 defeated Shuai in straight sets to reach the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the first time in her career.

Their history

The top seed and unseeded Kazakh have met on four occasions, and the world number one has a commanding 4-0 lead with their encounters taking place on hard courts and grass.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion won their first meeting in straight sets in the second round of the Rogers Cup in 2009, followed by a fourth round victory at Wimbledon in 2012, which was a tough three-set encounter with the American clinching it 6-1, 2-6, 7-5, and she went on to win the title at SW19 for the fifth time.

Their third meeting was at the US Open in 2013 and it was a one-sided affair with Williams clinching it 6-3, 6-1 and she went on to win her fifth US Open title in the process.

Williams won their most recent matchup in the second round of the Miami Open, and it was a 7-6, 6-2 victory for the American.

Who wins?

The six-time US Open champion is the heavy favourite to win this match, and Williams has a good serve which has been working well on the courts in New York along with returning well, and getting cheap points by serving aces out wide and down the T.

Although Williams can extend points in rallies, Shvedova has the chance to get the top seed in an uncomfortable position to commit unforced errors.

Williams likes to dictate play on the baseline with her heavy groundstrokes and her forehands and backhands are another strong point of her game.

Shvedova is a heavy hitter like Williams along with being established at the net due to her days of playing in the doubles with Vania King as the Kazakh-American duo have won two Grand Slam doubles titles at Wimbledon and US Open in 2010.

The former top 30 player has a good serve and her forehand is a dangerous weapon which Williams has to look out for, however, the Kazakh is prone to serving double faults, and the American has had little problems with Shvedova in their past encounters on hard courts.

The world number one's ranking is on the line with Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber firmly poised to take it and Agnieszka Radwanska is still in the hunt with French Open champion Garbine Muguruza out of the equation since losing in the second round to surprise quarterfinalist Anastasija Sevastova.

This is the third match scheduled in the Arthur Ashe Stadium and the winner of this match will play fifth seed Simona Halep or 11th seed Carla Suarez Navarro in the quarterfinals.

Prediction: Williams in straight sets
