It was a quick Citi Open run for Eugenie Bouchard who was downed by hard-hitting Camila Giorgi in the first round. The Canadian was 2-0 lifetime against the Italian and had not dropped more than three games in a set to her in their two meetings. Despite that, Giorgi looked the much better of the two today as her punishing groundstrokes troubled the young Canadian. The Italian won 7-5, 6-4 and will face Tamira Paszek in the next round.

Giorgi’s Late Break Helps Her Capture First Set

The weather in Washington DC has been hot, hot, hot. Today brought a dry heat as humidity stayed down, but the temperatures were still sweltering as it was in the 90s. It was no problems for Bouchard and Giorgi in their first service games as they held with ease. In the Canadian’s second service game, she played an error-filled game which led to her getting broken as the Italian moved to 3-1 up in the set.

Giorgi held for 4-1, but Bouchard continued to battle back and eventually, her persistence paid off as a combination of brilliant shots plus errors from the mistake-laden Italian got the break back. The set look destined to head into a tiebreak, but Bouchard faltered as unforced errors continued to creep into her play as Giorgi took the first set 7-5.

Giorgi Completes The Sweep

The set started similarly to the first with both women holding serve early to start. Giorgi ran into a little trouble in her second service game, battling through a few deuce points before eventually escaping it with a hold. The move of the set was made by the Italian who took the break in the sixth game. She was unable to convert her first break point but took the second one to put her one game closer to taking her first match over the Canadian.

She would go on to consolidate for 5-2 and looked ready to close it out at 5-3 but was broken to 30 as she served for the match as the Canadian went on to extend it. Serving to level the set at five apiece, Bouchard faltered in her service. She held a game point at 40-30, but Giorgi continued to offer no rhythm for Bouchard, who needs to get in one to get her game flowing, as the Italian only needed one point to close out the match.
