Yaroslava Shvedova had a strong showing at Wimbledon as she reached her third Grand Slam quarterfinal losing to Venus Williams and she was a runner-up in the doubles event partnering Hungarian, Timea Babos losing to Venus again and her sister Serena Williams.

The Russian-born Kazakh commented on her social media account, Twitter about former world number ones' Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka's absences from the tour.

Sharapova is currently serving a two-year ban from tennis due to taking Meldonium and Azarenka announced yesterday that she is pregnant and will miss the rest of the  2016 WTA season but the Belorussian intends to return to play competitive tennis next year.

Shvedova praises Azarenka as she is "happy for Vika"

The Kazakh said on her Twitter account, "the Tour will become a bit quiet for some time." Plenty would have automatically thought that Shvedova was pleased not to see these two pioneers of tennis not competing but she gave fans clarity, "I'm so happy for Vika to make a big decision in her life to become a mother."

Players on tour make comments about Sharapova's ban

However Shvedova didn't comment on Sharapova's ban from the sport but like many of their colleagues who have commented on the matter, they were not sympathetic.

A few months ago, Eastbourne champion and the recently married Dominika Cibulkova made comments about Sharapova's ban, "I will only say that I don't feel sorry at all for Sharapova and I don't miss her on tour, she's a totally unlikeable person, (she's) arrogant, conceited and cold."

Former Wimbledon finalist Agnieszka Radwanska, like Shvedova, refused to comment on the issue, as she was asked if she missed the Russian on tour.

"You should ask the fans, anyway, there are many other great players."

French Open Ladies' doubles champion Kristina Mladenovic's comments a few months ago about Sharapova's suspension and she was ruthless.

"When you fail a drug test you should be suspended because our sport is clean and must remain, I said that legally or illegally taking that substance for 10 years is wrong for my opinion and I'm shocked that it comes from a champion like her..."

Many of the top players will certainly be pleased that Azarenka and Sharapova are not on the tour at the moment as it means there will be more opportunities for them to win the big tournaments.
