Heading the hunt for a medal in Rio is fifth-ranked Simona Halep. The former Grand Slam finalist would be Romania’s best bet at winning a medal. Joining her are her compatriots Irina-Camelia Begu, who had a terrific clay season boosting her rankings up to top 30, and first-timer Monica Niculescu.

Halep doubtful over virus concerns

Even though Halep has qualified to Rio based on her ranking and participations in Fed Cup, the Romanian has cited concerns over the Zika virus. Hence, Halep has not confirmed her commitment to Rio. With the Romanian finding form in Wimbledon, her country will miss her presence should she withdraw from Rio and give up her chance to represent her country.

The 24-year-old has prior experience in the Olympics having competed in London in 2012. Back then, she was just breaking out and finding her own but was knocked out in the first round by Yaroslova Shvedova. This time, should she compete, the fifth-ranked Halep would definitely be one of the contenders.

Begu back again

The second-ranked Romanian has found new resurgence following a terrific clay season where she made semifinals at Rome, quarterfinals at Madrid and Charleston and reaching as far as the round of 16 at the French Open. Sitting at 31, though she had a disappointing grass season, she could regroup once more before Rio. The Romanian’s best showing on the hard courts came at Miami where she made the round of 16.

Previously having competed in the Olympics in 2012, she was ousted in the first round by the eventual bronze medallist Victoria Azarenka. This time round, she will be looking to progress further in search of a medal.

Niculescu’s first Olympics

This will be Niculescu’s first participation at the Olympics. Despite a rather average season, her role in the Fed Cup has enabled her to qualify for Rio. Currently, she is also the third-ranked Romanian, gaining a direct qualification to represent her country.

Niculescu’s unorthodox style has known to trouble players and could yet again do the same when the Olympics come along.
