Andy Murray opened his Wimbledon campaign with a comprehensive win over British number six Liam Broady in an entertaining encounter on Centre Court.

This was the British pair's first meeting. Prior to this summer's grass court season, it had been 10 years since Murray last played a Brit in an ATP Tour level match, however, facing Broady marked his third match against a Brit in as many weeks (d. Bedene at Queens R3 and Edmund at Queens QF).

Straightforward first set from the Scot

The 2013 champion came quickly out of the blocks, holding to love before immediately breaking his compatriot for the loss of just one point. Broady got a game on the board to enter the match but Murray was in firm control as he took a 4-1  lead.

The world number two was under a bit of pressure at 30-30 on serve, but an ace snuffed out the chance and held for a 5-2 lead. The British number one then launched a backhand cross court return winner to reach set point before and error from Broady wrapped up the set 6-2.

A more competitive second

Murray was in cruise control in the second set also, making a breakthrough in the fourth game before racing into a 4-1 lead. Broady tried to fire himself up after a hold to love to pull it back to 4-2. A backhand into the net and a forehand beyond the baseline put the Scot 0-30 down, but the world number two responded with the next three points.

Murray surprisingly netted a forehand on game point but was able to close it out to take a 5-2 lead. Broady forced his opponent to serve it out, but the former champion duly obliged, taking the set 6-3.

The world number two gained another early break at the start of the third set. However, Broady managed to recover from 0-30 down in the third game on serve to stay in touch. The British number six had 15-30 when Murray was serving for the match, but two aces and a drop shot winner to finish secured the match for the 2013 champion in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.
