The third round of the girls’ singles draw at the French Open was completed on Thursday, with only four seeded players reaching the last eight. Four Americans also went crashing out, leaving only one still standing. The quarterfinals field is set in Paris, so let’s take a look back at what happened on Thursday at Roland Garros.

Top seed Olesya Pervushina survived a scare in her third round match, battling back from a set down to narrowly edge thirteenth seed Marketa Vondrousova. After a late break put her in an early hole, Pervushina roared back to claim the second set, before grabbing a late break of her own to seal the 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 victory. She is joined in the quarterfinals by countrywoman Anastasia Potapova, who also had to battle through a tough three-setter against qualifier Lucrezia Stefanini.
Second seed Amanda Anisimova, the last American standing in either junior singles draw, emerged victorious in a back-and-forth all-American clash with Michaela Gordon. The second seed opened up the match with a bagel, only to drop the second set 1-6. She bounced back well for a narrow 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 victory. In the quarterfinals, she will take on home hope Emmanuelle Salas. The French wildcard upset fifth seed Dayana Yastremska with late breaks in each set, emerging victorious 7-5, 7-5.
The biggest upset of the day saw Ukrainian Katarina Zavatska stun third seeded American Kayla Day 6-4, 6-3. Day had yet to drop a set in the tournament, but she struggled against Zavatska’s strong returning and was broken six times. Zavatska will take on 12th seed Rebeka Masarova, who bounced back after getting shut out in the first set tiebreak to win 6-7(0), 6-2, 6-3 in her third round match against Federica Bilardo.
A pair of qualifiers have also made dream runs to the quarterfinals. Romanian Ioana Minca won her second straight three-setter, bouncing back after dropping the first set to ninth seed Usue Maitane Arconada to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. She is joined by fellow qualifier Iga Swiatek of Poland, who has yet to drop a set in three matches. On Thursday, Swiatek topped tenth seed Sofia Kenin 6-4, 7-5.
In the quarterfinals, top seed Pervushina will take on qualifier Minca, Zavatska will play Masarova, Swiatek will face Potapova, and Salas will have the home crowd with her against Anisimova.
