Naomi Broady, Lin Zhu and Cagla Buyukakcay all booked a place in the quarterfinals with comfortable wins. The highest seed left in the draw, Elina Svitolina, overcame resistance from qualifier Risa Ozaki to get the win in three sets.
Broady Makes Second WTA Quarterfinal This Year
Broady got the first win of the day, defeating qualifier Zhaoxuan Yang. It was a pretty even first set with both players broken twice before Broady held to lead 5-4 on serve. Yang saved one set point in the crucial 10th game, but Broady created once more and this time seized the moment to take the first set. The Brit tidied up her game in the second set and started brightly, breaking Yang to race to a 3-0 lead. That one break was all it took, as Broady won all her service games in the second set to move onto her second WTA quarterfinal of the year with a 6-4, 6-3 win.
Zhu Keeps Chinese Hopes Alive
Zarina Diyas won the only time that the pair met previously. This time, the result was reversed as Zhu got the better of Diyas. It was a tight first set with little to separate the two. Both found it hard to save the few break points that they faced and that proved detrimental to Diyas. She was serving at 6-5 to stay in the first set, when Zhu pounced on to a break opportunity to grab the first set 7-5. Diyas struggled to hold her service games in the second set and got broken thrice. That allowed Zhu to take the second set in just half an hour to seal the match 7-5, 6-2.
Buyukakcay Continues Her Good Run
The Turk went up against the top seed slayer, Kai-Chen Chang, for a berth in the quarterfinals. The first set was close, as both players exchanged a couple of breaks before Buyukakcay edged Chang 7-5. The Turkish player was getting in more than 80 percent of her first serves throughout the match and stepped it up a level by winning more points off them in the second set. The serving quality helped Buyukakcay as she faced zero break points on her serve in the second set to complete a 7-5, 6-3 victory for her first quarterfinal of the year.
A Late Ozaki Resistance Does Not Halt Svitolina
It was clinical Svitolina at the start, racing through the first set for her third 6-1 set of the tournament. With the way she was playing, it looked to be another quick match for the Ukrainian. The Japanese however had other plans, as the second set turned out to be a marathon. Ozaki fended off four break points to hold for 1-0. Svitolina almost repeated the same feat, but the Japanese got the break at her fourth chance to lead 2-0. A relatively poor set in terms of serving for the Ukrainian allowed a relentless Ozaki to take the second set.
Svitolina was able to regroup in the deciding set though, and snuffed out the Japanese's hopes with a fine display of serving. She would lose just three points on serve, to finish the match 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.
Quarterfinals Lineup On Day Five
The only Chinese left in the competition, Zhu and Qiang Wang, take on each other first on Centre Court. The other three quarterfinal matches see players meeting each other for the first time. Kristina Kucova sets up a clash with the second seed, Svitolina. Buyukakcay goes up against sixth seed Eugenie Bouchard, while the last quarterfinal match of the day sees Sabine Lisicki facing Broady for a berth in the semifinals.
