Milos Raonic’s announcement that Carlos Moya will work with him in Melbourne came as a surprise to most of the tennis world. However, Moya has said that it was not a snap decision. As the Canadian kicks off his season this week in Brisbane, his new coach/mentor has opened up about the new partnership. He has also put a temporary time frame on the partnership.

Joining the Team

Moya recently revealed to Spanish media about how he and Raonic came to be, and it all started as soon as Ivan Ljubicic left back in late November.

Me and Raonic started talking about it when he stopped working with Ljubicic. His manager called me, and after IPTL we started to practice together and to give each other some feedbacks. He asked me if I was available to travel with him and to be part of the project. After one week, it means a few days ago, he called me saying that I was the perfect person for him.

Moya also shed some light on how he will fight into the new team. He emphasised the he will work with Ricardo Piatti, who has been a part of Raonic’s coaching team since march 2014. “I will work with Piatti. Riccardo is going to follow Milos every day, I will follow him for 15 weeks.

Moving Forward

While there has been no official word about how long Moya will work with Raonic, the former world number one did shed some light on this. He has confirmed that the partnership will stretch beyond the Australian Open, saying he will “follow [Milos] for 15 weeks.” He has not confirmed whether these are fifteen consecutive weeks starting in Melbourne, or whether he will join for specific events.

In either case, Moya is excited to work with Raonic and seems to believe that the partnership will lead to bigger and better things. “It should be a long term collaboration, but there is nothing sure. Milos is a player with an enormous potential and I believe he can make some huge improvements on his game.
