The semifinals are set at the Moselle Open in Metz, France. Local hopes are still alive with second seed Gilles Simon and third seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, both still in position to potentially face each other in the final on Sunday.

Wawrinka Withdraws Due To Ankle Injury
Top seed Stan Wawrinka announced early in the day that he was going to withdraw from the Moselle Open due to an ankle injury. Wawrinka reportedly suffered a right ankle sprain during his second-round match with Dustin Brown on Thursday. His exit allows fifth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber a free pass into the semifinals. Kohlschreiber is yet to drop a set in beating John Millman and Paolo Lorenzi this week. The walkover win for the German advances him to his first indoor semifinal since 2012 in Montpellier.

Klizan Outduels Garcia-Lopez
In the only matchup that took place between seeded players in the quarterfinals, sixth seed Martin Klizan outlasted fourth seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Garcia-Lopez took advantage of some soft second serves from Klizan in the opening set to take the lead. The Spaniard won eight of 13 points off Klizan's second serve as he broke him twice on five chances. In the second set, it was the sixth seed who saw more break opportunities. After trading service holds to a 3-2 lead for Klizan, he converted the second of two break points off Garcia-Lopez's serve for a 4-2 lead. He would make that stand to even the match at a set each.

In the third set, both players saved multiple break points to help send the match to a decisive tie break. After being down a mini break twice, Klizan rallied late in the breaker and closed out the match at 7-4. The match was very even all the way through as evidenced by the final point tally that saw both players winning exactly 101 points.

Two Frenchmen Book Semifinal Spots
Gilles Simon was able to work past the big serving lefty from Luxembourg as he downed Gilles Muller in straight sets. After swapping service holds for the first six games of the opening set, Simon broke Muller for a 4-3 lead in the first. He made that hold up for a 6-4 set win. Simon saved his only break point given out in the set and won 21 of 29 points on serve.

In the second, Muller seemed to be teetered on being broken early, but managed to save two break points as the score moved to 4-3 in his favor. The lefty then got three looks at break points off Simon's serve, but failed to convert any. With his focus looking a bit off after that, Muller was broken in the next game as Simon finished him off for a 6-4, 6-4 win. A big difference maker for the Frenchman came on second serve where he took 14 of 25 points from Muller, but won 14 of 18 on his own serve.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga tussled with unseeded comrade Nicolas Mahut in the last quarterfinal of the day. Tsonga was rarely troubled on serve in the first, but Mahut was able to match him. Mahut saved five break points along the way as the first set went to a tie break. Tsonga failed to convert a set point at 6-5 and that left the door open for Mahut who won the final three points to score the surprising first set win 8-6 in the breaker. The set ended dead even with both players winning 42 points.

Mahut might have been spent after the tense tie break as the second set opened with him being broken. Tsonga rolled on serve again and squared the match at one set by securing the second at 6-3. The third seed won 16 of his 21 service points in the set, while Mahut won just 55 percent of his 44 service points.

Tsonga was under fire on serve with Mahut, shockingly breaking him at love. Mahut would consolidate the break for a 2-0 lead. He nearly scored a bonus break in the third game, but Tsonga was able to fend off two break points and hold serve. That would loom large within three games as the third seed broke Mahut at love in the sixth game to square the set at 3-3. The pair would exchange holds to a 6-5 Tsonga lead when he sprung again with a love service break of Mahut to claim the match, 7-5 in the final set. Tsonga's serve proved the key for the match as he won 85 percent of his first serve points, while Mahut managed just 63 percent.

Semifinal Schedule
The first semifinal on Saturday pits Gilles Simon against Martin Klizan. Simon has won both their career meetings with the last coming in 2014 at the French Open.
