3 matches in a week
Atlanta is coming off a 2-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls, with three games in eight days, and a tight Eastern Conference playoff race.
"It was a tough game that hurt us a lot," "We finished it with a lot of frustration, but I showed them the reality. The reality is we're four points out of the playoff line with 27 points at stake. Obviously, if we stayed in a negative mental space, in the moment everything would look dark and gloomy, that we're a mess, but that's not the case. I think the team does a lot of things well. First of all, I like that they never give up, that they fight, that they give everything, that they create opportunities. I think the team gives 100%," said coach Gonzalo Pineda.
Looking for playoffs
Atlanta United is looking to advance to the playoffs, but will face Columbus Crew, a team that is already there, coming into the match in 5th place with 34 points and a record of 8-6-10.
Columbus plays its home games at Lower.com Field, a soccer-specific venue. Through July 2021, the last time Atlanta United visited Lower.com Field in 2021, they won 3-2 to ignite a four-game winning streak.
Everything is dangerous against Columbus
Atlanta has a 5-6-1 record against the Columbus Crew. The previous meeting, the series was evenly split, with five wins for each team. Columbus has owned the series of late, winning six of their last seven meetings against Atlanta.
"Everything in general is dangerous about Columbus, so we're going to come in with a good training plan, a good game plan and then try to play our game and try to get more and better chances than them," Pineda said.
Huge game
Caleb Porter spoke prior to the match between Atlanta and Columbus, where he emphasized that this will be a huge game, since their last matchup they have not stopped scoring points.
"I distinctly remember going into that game feeling like it was going to be a huge game," said head coach Caleb Porter. "Looking back, that was a huge moment for us going on the road and getting a win against Atlanta. And since then, we haven't stopped scoring points."
Meeting for the first time
The Crew's Cucho Hernandez and Atlanta United veteran Josef Martinez meet for the first time in the tournament. Hernandez and Martinez will create a dynamic duel. The contest at Lower.com Field features two confident strikers who prowl, exploit space and seemingly can score from any position.
They also represent a change in the way MLS operates. Instead of bringing in players with international experience to attract fans, the two South American forwards entered the league young and got off to a fast start to capture the league's attention.
Their similarities
Their similarities are not only in the number of goals scored, but in the way they play. Someone who knows this well is Martinez's former teammate and Hernandez's current teammate, Darlington Nagbe.
"It's similar to how they play, obviously, the stature as well," Nagbe said of the two players this week. "They bring finishing in the air to the game, excellent finishers. So, in my opinion, they're a little bit similar, and Cucho bounced back and has been doing great things for us. The same thing Josef has done for Atlanta. Two great strikers, lucky to have played with both of them and to still be playing with Cucho."
Not changing much
Columbus central defender Jonathan Mensah spoke prior to the match, mentioning that they don't need to change much, as they just need to play hard and take advantage of opportunities.
"We don't need to change much," "We need to play hard, play as a team and take our chances when we get some. Josef Martinez and his good individual players, we don't have to manage them individually, we have to do it collectively. I think we'll be fine," said Columbus central defender Jonathan Mensah.
Looking to keep his team
Atlanta midfielder Santiago Sosa insists he and his teammates remain "very focused" on leading the club to the Playoffs.
"The team is very excited, very motivated to make the playoffs," Sosa said. "That was our goal from the beginning of the season, so we are very focused on achieving that."
