To start Hope Solo or not to start her is the question and meaning of this. First things first, this writer is not saying Solo should not start once she is fully rested from her 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup experience. He is merely asking if she should start considering how well Haley Kopmeyer has played while she was away with the United States women’s national team.

Seattle Reign FC has played a total of 11 league games so far this season. In eight of those games, Kopmeyer has been the starter between the posts. During those starts, the Reign is 5-0-3 (win-loss-tie). In the other three games, ones that were started by Solo, they are 1-2-0.

The Reign are currently on an eight game unbeaten streak and have raced to the top of the NWSL standings where they are currently tied for first in with the Chicago Red Stars with 21 points. Other than a few miscues here and there, Haley has played extremely well as the number one goalkeeper.

The main question is do you stay with the hot hand or do you turn the reins back over to Solo. Solo is the all-time winningest goalkeeper in USWNT history and she just helped lead her country to their third world title. She also just came off a record tying streak of 540 minutes of not allowing a goal in world cup play. If anything, Solo’s pedigree is enough to start her.

In her three starts with the Reign, Solo has faced 16 shots and allowing five goals while saving 11. Kopmeyer has faced 42 shots on goals allowing eight goals while saving 34. Yes, she has faced far more shots and most ‘keepers need to get into a routine to be at their best.

We all know that all of the NWSL teams are selling tickets because fans want to see and pay homage to these returning players. They want to see the players that helped win their country a world title. They want to see the best on the field so their local team can do well and hopefully bring their team a league title.

This writer for one is glad that he does not have to make the decision that Laura Harvey has to make. In the end, we all know what decision will more than likely be made. When she is ready, Hope will be the starting goalkeeper for the Reign. From a coaching standpoint, Haley knew that she was a fill-in and she'll be ready if Hope should get injured. If the team starts to let in more goals and start losing games, some may question the decision to pull the hot hand.
