Australia took on Brazil in Round of 16 action on Sunday in Moncton and secured a late win thanks to an 80th minute goal. It was a shocking exit for a Brazilian team that many thought were one of the legitimate contenders to bring home the cup. For Australia, this win represents the farthest they have gone in a World Cup by reaching the second knockout game.

In the 80th minute, Australia struck as Lisa De Vanna found herself in on the keeper after a nice cross but shot her hard shot right at Brazilian goalkeeper Luciana. Luciana did not field it cleanly as the ball hit her in the hands and fell out, which trailing Australian player, Kyah Simon, found the bobbled ball around the , then slammed it into the back of the net. It was the only goal Brazil would end up conceding in this tournament.

"It came down to a simple little thing: losing the ball in midfield. We had controlled the match, especially in the second half. But we weren’t capable of finding an equalizer after conceding the goal." Vadao, Brazil coach, said.

The statistics showed Brazilian dominance but also an inability to score. Brazil created six shots on net to Australia's two and controlled possession 52 to 48 percent.

One of the major sticking points from this game was the very unusual somewhat below average play of Brazil's Marta. Marta was the point of discussion amongst the commentators after the game due to her inability to inject her quality into the game, which credit should be given to the Australian defense. On the other hand, Formiga proved to be dangerous attacker for Brazil. In the 28th minute, Formiga launched a shot from about 25 yard out that was heading for the upper left corner of the net forced Australian goalkeeper Lydia Williams to make a fantastic safe.

"The players stuck to their tasks well, demonstrating good execution speed and a strong mental attitude...We’re very happy to have beaten a potential Women’s World Cup winner like Brazil. It was amazing to see how much the team were up for the fight today. I’m extremely proud of them." said Alen Stajcic, Australia's coach.

With their win, Australia will face the winner of the Japan and Netherlands game on Tuesday in the quarterfinals this Saturday.
