Pre-Race Notebook

- Richmond International Raceway is a 0.75-mile D-shaped oval with 14 degrees of banking in the turns, which is among the highest amounts of banking in the series. The frontstretch is 1,290 feet in length, with the backstretch being 860 feet. The race is scheduled to be 400 laps, which is 300 miles.

- This is the final race before the Chase begins, so for the drivers who are not guaranteed entry into the Chase, they will be desperate for a win. As of right now, the top 11 in points have clinched their berth into the Chase, provided they attempt to qualify this weekend. There are currently five wild card spots available, which belong to Jamie Mcmurray, Ryan Newman, Jeff Gordon, Paul Menard, and Clint Bowyer.

- Among the drivers who need a win to get into the Chase are Kasey Kahne, Kyle Larson, Austin Dillon, Tony Stewart, and Danica Patrick. Of those drivers, Stewart has the most wins at Richmond, with three. Kahne is the only othe driver with a win at Richmond.

- With the results from Martinsville, Kyle Busch clinched a spot in the Chase, which is significant as he missed the first part of the season due to a broken leg that he suffered in the season opening Xfinity Series race.

- One major milestone of note is Jeff Gordon's streak of 786 consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts which he will extend this weekend. He is just two more starts away from tying Ricky Rudd for the most consecutive starts. This is a significant milestone since Gordon is slated to retire after the season ends.

- Last weekend's Bojangles' Southern 500 at Darlington was a throwback weekend for NASCAR, with many of the drivers and teams running throwback paint schemes. NBC even got into the act by using some throwback graphics, as well as having Ken Squier, Ned Jarrett, and Dale Jarrett do almost an hour of the race broadcast. This writer wants to thank NBC and NASCAR for the amazing job they did with the weekend, especially using Squier and the Jarrets on the broadcast.
