The Six Hours of Nürburgring weekend started with the first practice session in wet conditions.

The No. 7 Audi of Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer was the fastest car of the session. Only 0.076 seconds behind was the No. 18 Porsche of Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb.

The top four was completed by the other Audi and Porsche cars. The No. 8 Audi of Lucas Di Grassi, Loïc Duval and Oliver Jarvis was third, 0.709 behind the leader. Just behind it was the No. 17 Porsche of Timo Bernhard, Mark Webber and Brendon Hartley, 0.714 behind the leader.

Toyota Racing has been out of the Audis' and Porsches' speed this year and that didn't change in the first practice at the Nürburgring. The No. 2 Toyota was fifth 2.611 seconds behind the leading Audi and the No. 1 Toyota was sixth, 3.340 seconds behind.

In the LMP2 class, the Ligier-Nissans of G-Drive Racing were the two fastest cars. The No. 28 G-Drive Ligier of Gustavo Yacaman, Pipo Derani and Ricardo Gonzalez was seventh-fastest overall, beating the privateer LMP1s of Rebellion Racing and Team Bykolles. The No. 26  G-Drive Racing Ligier of Roman Rusinov, Julien Canal and Sam Bird lost 0.992 seconds to its sister car. Strakka Racing were third-fastest in LMP2, losing 2.611 seconds to the class leader. The team had switched from it's Dome S103 chassis to Gibson 015S after Le Mans.

AF Corse's Ferraris were fastest in the GT classes. Their No. 51 Ferrari, driven by Gianmaria Bruni and Toni Vilander, was fastest in the GTE Pro class, followed by the No. 71 sister car, driven by Davide Rigon and James Calado, 0.374 seconds behind.

In GTE-Am, The No. 83 AF Corse Ferrari of François Perrodo, Emmanuel Collard and Rui Aguas was fastest, 0.143 seconds ahead of the No. 98 Aston Martin Racing car of Paul Dalla Lana, Pedro Lamy and Mathias Lauda.
