This is easily a game that could have caused some heartbreak and agony for fans of the New York Islanders. They have yet to clinch their playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, and they looked like they would at least get one point in this game, but then Brayden Schenn had some other ideas.

Claude Giroux got the Flyers going in the opening period though. He scored his 24th and 25th goals of the season, and both goals were assisted by Mark Streit and Jakub Voracek. The first of the two goals came with just over 7 minutes left in the period on a power play which was started when Johnny Boychuk tripped Claude Giroux.

In the second period John Tavares would score his 36th goal of the period to get the Islanders within 1 point. This was also a power play goal after Mark Streit was called for hooking. The goal was assisted by Ryan Strome and Nick Leddy. Just over a minute later though, the Flyers would extend the lead back to 2. Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored just his 6th goal of the season, and just barely into the third period Carlo Colaiacovo scored his 2nd goal of the season to give the Flyers a 3 goal lead with under 18 minutes left in the game.

It certainly didn't seem like the Islanders would have a great chance to come back as they were down three goals. But Anders Lee scored his 24th goal of the season with just under 12 minutes left to get the puck past Steve Mason for just the second time this evening. Then in the final two minutes Johnny Boychuk made up for his earlier penalty by getting another shot into the goal for the Islanders, and then with just 28 seconds left Anders Lee would score again.

With just 3 seconds left in the game, Brayden Schenn got a long slapshot into the goal as Jaroslav Halak would get the loss as the Islanders would fall 5-4.

The Flyers (33-29-18, 84 points) are out of the playoffs but they will still have a chance to play spoiler as they close out against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday, but mainly against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday, both games will be at home.

Meanwhile the Islanders (46-28-6, 98 points) will continue to look to clinch their spot later this week, first when they take on the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night in Pittsburgh, and then when they go home to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.
