The Todd Bowles Era is off to a pretty nice start, huh?

After beginning the season with a 31-10 win over the Cleveland Browns, the New York Jets stormed into Indianapolis as seven point underdogs, only to pound their way to a 13-point victory. Many Jet fans built this Monday Night matchup into a statement game for New York, and boy did the Jets deliver. New York's defense had five takeaways, never allowing the Colts' offense to get into a rhythm.

Second year safety Calvin Pryor had the first takeaway for the Green and White, picking off Andrew Luck on Indy's first possession. Pryor took the ball back to the Colts' nine yard line, and then Ryan Fitzpatrick found Eric Decker for the opening touchdown.

Fitzpatrick was solid for the Jets. New York's offense was far from surgical, but it was good enough to stay in the game and close it out. Fitzpatrick brought the Jets down the field in the second quarter to put up more points, as Nick Folk nailed a 35-yard field goal right after the two minute warning. Folk actually had a chance to put three more on the board right before halftime. After the Jets forced Andrew Luck to fumble, they drove into field goal range, only to have Folk hook a 48 yarder to the right.

But New York's defense was the real story of the night. Last season, the Jets recorded 13 takeaways in 16 games. In the new 2015-2016 campaign, they have a staggering 10 takeaways in two games.

Indianapolis' first drive of the second half was where the game really turned. Luck finally got his act together, leading the home team down to the goal line on 15 plays. On first and goal, Luck handed it to Josh Robinson, who appeared to fumble it right before the endzone. However, the play was upheld, and after being stuffed on second down, Indy had third and goal from the one yard line. Veteran Frank Gore caught a toss from Luck, but as Gore began to run into the wide open endzone, he bobbled the football. Darrelle Revis would recover the fumble, bringing the anxiety in Lucas Oil Stadium to a whole new level. The Jets defense was looking just like it did in 2010 when they found themselves in the AFC Championship game.

Revis would record his third takeaway of the game on the Colts' next possession, picking off a not-so-good pass from Luck, but the Colts would score on their next possession with a Donte Moncrief 26-yard touchdown. Suddenly, the pressure was back on Fitzpatrick.

Fitzy answered beautifully, leading an 80 yard drive to the endzone in less than four minutes. The drive included a a 27-yard catch by Quincy Enunwa, a speedster out of Nebraska who the Jets drafted in the sixth round in 2014. Fitzpatrick capped it off by finding Brandon Marshall on second and seven from the Colts' 15 for a touchdown, as Marshall bulldozed his way down the right sideline and over the pylon. With about six minutes left, Indianapolis needed to act fast, but their comeback attempt ended with another interception by Luck, this time at the hands of new Jet safety Marcus Gilchrist. Nick Folk hit another field goal on the ensuing drive, and the game was over.

The Jets really did make this a statement game. Todd Bowles' defense is doing exactly what Rex Ryan's playoff teams did; they're forcing turnovers out the wazoo. With this ability, the Jets might be able to beat anyone, including the New England Patriots. And, with a rather weak schedule this season, Bowles could be looking at a playoff appearance in his first season as head coach.

Of course, it's too early to tell, but all signs are pointing in the right direction right now. Even on offense, the Jets look impressively competent. Fitzpatrick had a solid game, completing 22 of his 34 attempts while only turning the ball over once. This is the difference between New York's current quarterback and the Sanchez's and Smith's of the past. Fitzpatrick's experience, combined with his best ever receiver corps, can eventually combine into a well oiled, turnover-free machine that can keep the Jets win games. And with this defense, that's really all they need.

Next week, the Jets head back home to face the Philadelphia Eagles (0-2), who are coming off a spectacularly frustrating loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Indianapolis will head on the road and face a division foe in the Tennessee Titans (1-1).
