The first big shock of the draft as the Washington Redskins select University of Iowa lineman Brandon Scherff. Scherff won the Outland Trophy in 2014 as the most outstanding interior lineman in college football. One of the biggest positives in the corner of Scherff is his strength. He has outstanding power in his legs which makes him very dominant in the running game. That will be a great addition for the Washington Redskins considering the emphasis to their running game with Alfred Morris at back and Robert Griffin at quarterback.
Another big positive about Scherff is his versatility. He was a high school quarterback during his sophomore year along with being the punter as well. According to a story told on the ESPN coverage tonight, his high school coach eventually moved Scherff to the offensive line because he was afraid that Brandon would “crush” his center on potential quarterback sneaks. Scherff outweighed his center by nearly 100 pounds.
Scouts are not sold on his pass protection skills which could mean that he plays as a guard rather than at tackle. His size would likely force him to play on the right side of the line if indeed he plays tackle at the pro level.
