The New York Jets ran for 277 yards and it seemed like they had the game under control against the Miami Dolphins. However, poor play-calling and an even worse execution started to doom their chances to escape with a MNF win at MetLife Stadium.

And even though several players failed to produce in the fourth quarter, tonight’s loss can certainly be blamed on Geno Smith. The second-year signal caller demonstrated his poor instincts once again and prevented the Jets from winning a game they had in total control.

The Jets got on the board thanks to rushing TD from Greg Salas in the first quarter and later both teams traded FGs to finish 13-6 after 45 minutes of action. By that time, Smith had only thrown a few passes as Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson were taking most of the workload against a Dolphins’ defense that looked weaker than usual against the run.

Miami, however, decided to wake up in the fourth quarter. A FG from Caleb Sturgis with less than four minutes on the clock put the Dolphins down by four points and a few drives later, Lamar Miller reached the end zone with a 4-yd rushing TD that put Miami on top 16-13.

The Jets’ fate was all in Geno’s hands. The West Virginia product had the pressure to lead New York with less than 2:30 on the clock and he wasn’t up to the task. He completed some short passes but with the game on the line, he threw a costly interception that ended up deciding the game. Smith wanted to connect with Jeff Cumberland but the pass was poorly thrown and the receiver had several Miami defenders around him so it was no surprise that it was intercepted.

Smith finished the game completing only seven of 13 passes. He didn’t throw a TD pass, was intercepted once and he was also sacked twice.

Smith’s total numbers this season are even worse. He has thrown seven TD passes all year long and after tonight he already has 11 INT against him. His numbers clearly aren’t the answer for the future of the franchise and while the Jets have plenty of gaps to fill on both sides of the ball, they would be wise to part ways with Smith as soon as possible if they want to return to be a respectable team around the NFL.
