The Cleveland Browns' released their first depth chart on Tuesday, and have Brian Hoyer listed as the number one quarterback. Former Heisman winner, Johnny Manziel, was listed as his backup.

There has been a tremendous amount of publicity and media attention during Browns' training camp as the two quarterbacks battle it out for the starting quarterback position. Head Coach Mike Pettine said he did a depth chart because he had to, and downplayed it by saying it could change after every game.

Manziel has made strides in camp so far, and has seemingly closed the gap between him and Hoyer. Manziel even took the first team snaps on Monday However, Tuesday was a different story, as both quarterbacks shared time with the first team, but Hoyer ended up with more snaps by the end of practice,

Both quarterbacks had good days, with Hoyer probably playing a little better. Though Pettine wouldn't state definitely that Hoyer would start Saturday's preseason opener at Detroit, signs strongly point that way.

"Where Hoyer is ahead is his ability to throw a ball before a guy breaks open," Pettine said. "But we certainly see Johnny making strides in that direction."

Manziel’s popularity has been evident as his jersey is listed as the top NFL seller thus far, and has put tremendous pressure on Coach Pettine and the Browns organization on who to name as their opening day starter.

There’s no question that Manziel is the more exciting player behind center for the Browns, but Hoyer showed a small sample size of success before he got injured. He proved that he has the talent to lead this team.

Hoyer completed 60% of his passes while throwing for 5 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in two starts for the Browns last season, both victories. That being said both victories came with Pro Bowl wide receiver Josh Gordon out on the field, a luxury neither quarterback may have if Gordon ends up losing his appeal of a season long suspension.

Manziel’s ceiling is also much higher than Hoyer’s, his arm strength and ability to create and extend plays with his feet is what allows him the potential to be a special player in the NFL. Neither quarterback lacks confidence as Browns teammates have expressed throughout training camp, both carry themselves with a great deal of ‘swag.’

Ultimately the decision may come down to how both quarterbacks perform in the preseason games and who is able to distance through their performance on the field. For now all the pressure is on Brian Hoyer to stay a step ahead of Manziel.

The Browns’ tough early season schedule may foretell it all as they open on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by two home games against the New Orleans Saints and the Baltimore Ravens.

That doesn’t seem like a very rookie friendly schedule and the Browns’ coaching staff must know that. It’s hard to fathom the Browns exposing Manziel early on to such a tough challenge right off the bat.

For this reason, it seems likely that the Browns will give Hoyer an opportunity first and see if he can build off what little success he had early last season.

If Hoyer is successful and the Browns are winning then it’ll be hard to make an argument to switch quarterbacks while the team is winning. However, if Hoyer and the  Browns struggle early on in the season, Manziel’s number will certainly be called upon.

Regardless who ends up starting the season as the starter, it is very likely that Cleveland fans will be pushing to see Manziel. He is an exciting player who has an opportunity to help turn this franchise around.

Think back to what happened in Denver a few years back when Kyle Orton was named the starting quarterback, only to be benched after the Broncos fell to a 1-4 record. The fans screamed and yelled for Tim Tebow to take over and it ultimately worked out, as they were able to make the playoffs, and defeat the Steelers in the AFC Wild Card round.

Hoyer may be slightly ahead of Manziel for now, but in the end ‘Johnny Football’ is likely to take center stage and have an opportunity to silence his critics.
