Three more rounds will be played
In the quarterfinals, the four top-ranked teams will play against the winners of the first round of playoffs, and from then on, they will face each other in cross-series until the final definition is reached. The four quarterfinals and two semifinals of the playoffs would be played in bowls on a rotating basis, just like the national championship.
How the 12-team playoffs would be played
The 12-team playoff will consist of the six highest-ranked conference champions by committee, with no minimum ranking requirement, and the six highest-ranked teams not among the conference champions.
The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded No. 1 through 4 and will receive a bye in the first round.
The other eight CFP teams will play in the first round (No. 12 vs. No. 5, No. 11 vs. No. 6, No. 10 vs. No. 7 and No. 9 vs. No. 8), which will be held on the campus of the highest seed or at another site of the highest seed's choice.
Important Announcement
On Friday, the championship board unanimously approved the expansion of the four-team playoff to 12 teams. The expansion will begin in the 2026 season, although the possibility of moving to 12 teams in the 2024 or 2025 season will be considered.
