Notre Dame set to get the ball first

The game is about to start

The teams are taking the field all pumped up

Breaking: Notre Dame announces Jerry Tillery is suspended for this game for violating team rules

In terms of betting odds, the Ohio State University Buckeyes are favored by -6.5 points according to SB Nation. The over/under for the Battle Frog Fiesta Bowl is 56.5 points. That is according to Westgate.

The key players for Ohio State are J.T. BarrettEzekiel Elliot, and Joey Bosa. J.T. Barrett has been the best of the Buckeyes QBs this season compiling 781 passing yards on a 63.8% completion percentage, along with 10 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Barrett has also carried the ball many times, garnering 3 games of over 100 yards rushing this year. The Buckeyes have been at their best as a team this season when Barrett is under center. Ezekiel Elliot has been a catalyst for the Buckeyes going back to their championship run last season. This season, Elliot has not underachieved, rushing for 1672 yards and a whopping 19 touchdowns. He has had a wild stretch, as two games ago he had his worst performance of the season against Michigan State, only garnering 33 yards. He followed that up with a 214 yard outburst vs. Michigan. It all depends on what version of Elliot shows up today, and what type of system Notre Dame has in place to stop him. Joey Bosa has been one of the best defensive players in football the past two seasons. This season the junior linebacker has 41 tackles, 1 interception, and 5 sacks. He needs to dominate Ronnie Stanley in what is easily the best draft preview matchup in the country.

The key players for Notre Dame are DeShone Kizer, Will Fuller and Matthias Farley. With the news of Devin Butler breaking his foot, Notre Dame’s secondary is thin. Senior Mathias Farley had 42 tackles on the season, and he needs to check and stop the Ohio State receiver that he is covering from making a big impact. The sophomore quarterback DeShone Kizer came in for Malik Zaire after he broke his leg in the third quarter - Virginia in week two and since then has been one of the Irish’ best players, except for the Boston College game. Kizer is easily the most clutch QB in the country as he has led ND to wins from the brink of defeat all season long. He has to be clutch in this game. This season, Kizer has completed 63.4% of his passes for 2,600 yards, 19 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He can also run the ball as he has 499 yards and 9 touchdowns this season when rushing the ball. This is far and away the biggest game DeShone Kizer has played in thus far in his career, and he needs to be ready for it/play well for the Irish to win this game. Will Fuller is one of the best wide receivers in the nation. Fuller needs to get sprung and dominate the Buckeyes secondary. If Fuller can get past the secondary and run up and down the field making big plays, he has a good chance at helping ND win the 2016 Fiesta Bowl.

The keys to the game for the Buckeyes are to pressure DeShone Kizer and force ND into mistakes. As previously stated, Notre Dame has turned the ball over 18 times on offense this season, Ohio State needs to force turnovers like Clemson did in their win over the Irish to have a chance to win this game. The Buckeyes also have to pressure DeShone Kizer. In the same vein as the turnover problem, they have to get Kizer to feel uncomfortable in the pocket and force him into bad throws.

The keys to the game for Notre Dame are to hang on to the ball and get ahead early. Notre Dame needs to punch Ohio State square in the face from the opening kickoff. They must let the Buckeyes know they are in for a brutal battle all game long and they can’t sleep on the Irish. ND QB Deshone Kizer has nine picks on the season, and the team has lost 9 fumbles thus far this season. For them to beat the Buckeyes they need to hold onto the ball.

Both teams have had some controversy leading up to this game as suspensions have been handed down from both teams to key players. On Tuesday Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly announced that junior safety Max Redfield was sent home for violating team rules. Ohio State also suspended defensive tackle Adolphus Washington in early December after he was arrested for attempting to solicit prostitution from an undercover cop. The teams have also dealt with injuries as Notre Dame starting cornerback Devin Butler broke his foot and will be out for this game. Defensive tackle Tommy Schutt will be out for the Buckeyes with a foot injury.

The last game for the Ohio State Buckeyes was a 42-17 win over the Michigan Wolverines on November 28th. Notre Dame’s last game was also on November 28th when they lost on a last second field goal to the rival Stanford Cardinals by a score of 38-36.

These two programs are two of the most legendary programs in college football. They are tied for most all time in terms of Heisman Trophy winners with legendary names like Johnny Lujack, Tim Brown, Archie Griffin, and Eddie George. Notre Dame is third and Ohio State is second in regards to first round NFL draft picks, only behind USC

The last time these two teams played was in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl.  In the 2006 Fiesta Bowl, the Buckeyes won 34-20 powered by future NFLers like AJ Hawk, Ted Ginn Jr., and Santonio Holmes. The teams have played each other 5 times with the Buckeyes owning a 3-2 record. Ohio State is currently on a three game winning streak from 1995-2006. The longest Irish winning streak in the series is two games when they beat the Buckeyes in 1935 and 1936.

Welcome to VAVEL USA's live coverage of the 2016 BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl. The number eight team in the country, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, will go up against the number seven team in the country in the Ohio State Buckeyes in the 2016 Fiesta Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium. The Fighting Irish came into this game with a 10-2 record after losses to the number one team in the country Clemson and the number 5 team in the country Stanford. The Buckeyes come into this game with a 11-1 record after losing to the number three team in the country Michigan State. This is the 3rd straight ND-OSU game where both teams are top 10 teams.
