LOS ANGELES, Ca. -- Kevin Hogan and the Stanford Cardinal conducted a perfectly-balanced attack to Trojan-horse No. 6 USC in a 41-31 win at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to upset the home side Saturday night.

Hogan passed for 279 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 18/23 completed passes in the win for Stanford, while the Cardinal rushing attack added 195 on the ground to mount a dominant offensive game and stump USC's defense.

Christian McCaffrey ran for 115 on 26 carries, but Remound Wright was the one to bring home the bacon (or the points in this case), rushing for 41 yards and a hat trick of TDs on 11 carries. Hogan also ran for 28 yards on seven attempts from under center.

On the other end of Stanford's passes, Austin Hooper gained 79 yards on four catches, scoring the team's opening to even the game at 7-7 in the first quarter. Devon Cajuste added two receptions for 21 yards and a score.

USC's combo of Cody Kessler and Juju Smith-Schuster through the air was clicking throughout this one, but was not enough to keep up with the unpredictably-varied and even offense coming from their opponents. Kessler threw for 272 yards and a trio of scores, while Smith-Schuster caught eight passes for 153 yards and a TD.

The Trojans originally started this contest on top, gaining a 14-7 lead by the first quarter's end. After Stanford leveled it up at 7-7 with Hooper's 16-yard catch for six, Kessler hit Steven Mitchell Jr. for a six-yarder to go back up.

Stanford made it a four-point game with an early second-quarter 42-yard field goal by Conrad Ukropina, but Juju and Cody came right back with an electric 54-yard connection. Smith-Schuster picked up the one block he needed on the crossing rout and was off to the races down the left sideline from there.

That's when the tides turned in the Cardinal's favor. Stanford answered twice before the halftime break, as Remound Wright made it again a one-possession game with 3:23 left in the second on a one-yard surge set up by a 24-yard Hooper grab.

Hogan orchestrated a phenomenal late-half drive, capped off by a Devon Cajuste 17-yard TD to somehow manage a 24-21 lead with 0:03 left in the half. Stanford drove down for 78 yards in eight plays over just a minute and 23 seconds to grab that momentum-shifting lead into halftime.

After a bad punt from Stanford to start the third, Kessler drove 40 yards and hit Steven Mitchell Jr. for a one-yard score, Mitchell's second of the night, putting USC up 28-24.

On the following drive, the Stanford Cardinal rolled down the field with the major contributions of multiple running backs, leading to another one-yarder from Wright to re-take the lead. Afterwards, the Stanford D tightened up, only allowing a field goal for the rest of the game.

Hogan and the offense for Stanford conducted multiple lengthy fourth-quarter scoring drives to waste away the time remaining. Wright scored his third from a yard out to put USC down by two possessions for the first time in the game, and a field goal by Ukropina made it 41-31 to finish the upset over their Pac-12 rivals.

Stanford ended the game with over nearly 40 minutes of possession, and compiled 474 total yardage en route to the victory over USC, who is certainly not to be No. 6 in this coming Sunday's poll rankings.

Being the first week of intraconference play, this gives Stanford (2-1, 1-0 in Pac-12) a 1-0 start in tough Pac-12 play while the Trojans (2-1, 0-1 in Pac-12) will now have a significantly tougher time in climbing up the standings to gain their expected season finish.
