PISCATAWAY -- Luke Falk led the Washington State Cougars to a thrilling last-play victory at the Rutgers Scarlet Knights Saturday afternoon. He hit River Cracraft for the game-winning eight-yard reception after a 10-play, 90-yard drive that negated a breathtaking fourth quarter by Rutgers at HighPoint Solutions Stadium.

That miraculous surge by Falk and Washington State came after Janarion Grant of the Scarlet Knights scored his second return TD on a 55-yard punt return score that somehow put Rutgers up 34-30 with a minute and a half left in the game. Grant had scored a 100-yard kick return to put up the home side earlier in the fourth.

Falk fought all the way for the Cougars, notching 478 yards, 4 TDs, and zero interceptions on 47/66 passing. Cracraft played strongly on the final drive, pushing his way past the century mark receiving, as he finished with eight catches and 121 yards. Gabe Marks had 14 receptions for 146 yards and a score as well for Wash. State.

Rutgers was killed by penalties all night and especially in the key late moments, having a duo of touchdowns called back that could have made an impossible-to-overcome advantage to the Scarlet Knights, who scored 22 points in the fourth.

All the action did happen in the fourth, as it was a mere 13-6 lead for the Cougars at the half. The first TD came on the opening drive, when Falk hit Dom Williams for a seven-yarder in the endzone. Williams finished with 71 yards on the evening.

Washington State gained a two-score lead following a shortened-TD drive after an opening-series fumble from Rutgers in the third. Keith Harrington caught a 5-yard throw from Falk to cap off the drive.

Robert Martin answered with a 15-yard rushing TD on the next drive for Rutgers, but Kyle Federico's PAT was blocked to make it a 20-12 game. He finished the game with 61 yards and a TD.

Chris Laviano hit Matt Flanagan on the first play of the fourth quarter to even the game after a two-point conversion to Leonte Carroo. That started the heavy-scoring fourth that became an instant classic.

After a WSU field goal, Grant zoomed 100 yards for his kick return score to put Rutgers up for the first time in the game. It almost looked like the junior was running twice as fast as everyone else on the field.

Falk hit Gabe Marks for a magnificent 23-yard TD on Washington State's next drive to regain a 30-27 lead. Rutgers then hit a brick wall, fumbling on their next drive in Cougars territory. Luckily for coach Mike Flood, his defense forced one of their few stops on the following drive, forcing a turnover on downs at the Rutgers 39.

After Grant's punt return score with under two minutes remaining, it was only a minute in game time before Rutgers fans were silenced and the Cougars came back to shockingly annihilate the Rutgers defense for a game-winner with 13 seconds left.

You know after two return TDs that Grant wouldn't get another chance. Leonte Carroo was kicked at, and he and the Rutgers return team were unable to finagle a miracle.

Rutgers is now 1-1, with a bad situation going into a tough stretch of games, as they'll face Penn State next Saturday followed by an October featuring Michigan State, Ohio State, and Wisconsin.

Washington State improves to 1-1, and they also have a tough next month and a half to come, with matchups against Oregon, Cal, Arizona, and Stanford.
