After falling at the hands of the Utah Utes in their first game of the season, the Michigan Wolverines needed to turn things around in their home opener against the Oregon State Beavers. The Maize and Blue did just that with a dominant performance from running back De'Veon Smith, who led the Wolverines to a 35-7 victory over the Beavers.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh picked up his first coaching victory as a member of Michigan. It is the start of a bright future.

The Beavers broke out early with a 21-yard touchdown strike from Seth Collins to Hunter Jarmon with 13 minutes left in the first quarter. The Michigan defense shut down Oregon State the rest of the way.

Collins finished 9-for-16 with 79 yards through the air. The freshman tossed a touchdown and avoided a turnover on Saturday, but was sacked twice by the Wolverines.

Michigan got their first points at home this season on a 40-yard field goal from Kenny Allen midway through the first quarter, but a touchdown did not come until late in the second quarter.

With four minutes left before halftime, Smith scored on a one-yard rush to give Michigan a 10-7 lead. After Michigan forced a three-and-out, the snap from Ryan Navarro went over the head of punter Nick Porebski, which allowed Michigan to get the ball at their own three-yard line with under 30 seconds left in the half. It was a 48-yard loss for the Beavers.

With 12 seconds left before halftime, Smith was back at it with another one-yard touchdown run to put Michigan up by 10 points at the half.

Porebski punted six times for 240 yards, one going inside the 20-yard line. As for Michigan, Blake O'Neill punted three times for 127 yards, two of them inside the 20-yard line with a long of 49 yards.

Allen hit another field goal, this time from 29 yards, to put Michigan ahead 20-7. To start the fourth quarter, Michigan found themselves in the end zone once again. To no surprise, it was Smith who made a few defenders miss to wind up with an eight-yard touchdown carry.

After the rushing touchdown, Michigan quarterback Jake Rudock found Smith for the two-point conversion, which gave Michigan the 28-7 lead over Oregon State with 14 minutes left to play.

Rudock, who was picked to start over Shane Morris, finished 18-for-26 with 180 yards through the air. He did not compile a touchdown, while throwing an interception midway through the fourth quarter. The fifth-year senior was solid despite missing a few receivers and fumbling the ball once.

Once Michigan took a 21-point lead, the Beavers elected to go with backup quarterback Marcus McMaryion, who struggled. The freshman finished 0-for-3 without gaining any offensive yards. Collins came back in for McMaryion after a horrible drive by the backup.

Amara Darboh, Jake Butt, Jehu Chesson and Smith led the receiver core for the Wolverines in the victory. Darboh led all players with 50 yards on four receptions. But, the dominant tight end caught four passes for 25 yards. The Beavers did a great job of shutting him down throughout the entire game. Chesson was missed twice down the field by Rudock, which forced him to finish with just one catch for 14 yards. Once Rudock and Chesson get on the same page the wide out will become a huge factor.

Smith finished the afternoon with 23 carries for 127 yards and three touchdowns with a long of 36. He also added 24 receiving yards on two receptions. Michigan used Smith to play the old-fashion smash mouth football, which Harbaugh is attempting to recreate.

Oregon State's receiving core was led by Jordan Villamin, who caught three passes for 26 yards.

Rudock was intercepted by Rommel Mageo on a first and 15 yards to go pass play at the Beavers 49-yard line. Rudock has thrown four interceptions this season with only one touchdown to his name.

With four minutes left in the game, Rudock handed the ball off to Derrick Green, who pounded it home for a two-yard touchdown run. The junior running back finished the night with eight carries for 35 yards and one touchdown. After that touchdown, the Wolverines led 35-7 over the Beavers.

Michigan totaled 405 yards, while Oregon State only managed 138. Most of that due to the fact that Michigan obtained the ball for 37 minutes and 59 seconds, compared to 22 minutes and one seconds for Oregon State.

Oregon State finished 1-for-11 in third down situations, which forced them to punt multiple times.

Michigan faces the UNLV Rebels at 12:00 PM ET next weekend on September 19 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
