It was a dominant first quarter for the defending National Champion Ohio State Buckeyes.. They took advantage of a Virginia Tech offense that looked out of sync and Cardale Jones and the Buckeyes made the Hokies pay.

Jones found Curtis Samuel for a 24 yard strike to give Ohio State the 7-0 lead early. Then Ezekiel Elliott broke through a couple of tackles on a run up the middle and ran all the way to the end zone for an 80 yard touchdown to extend the early lead. It was a typical Elliott touchdown as he ran through contact and was able to break free for the score. Ohio State was able to find space on the edges as Virginia Tech loaded up the middle, a similar defensive schene to the one the Hokies used last year. It looked like this game was over in the first quarter.

But it all changed in the second quarter. First a holding penalty brought a Jones touchdown pass back and Jack Willoughby missed the ensuing kick to give Virgina Tech good starting field position. Virginia Tech struck back when Michael Brewer found fullback Sam Rogers wide open behind the defense and Rogers was able to run down the field, juke out the safety, and run into the endzone for a touchdown.

Virginia Tech would then catch a break when a tipped pass fell into the hands of a diving Desmond Frye and the Hokies were subsequently able to tack on a field goal to cut the lead to four. Virginia Tech then caught another huge break when Elliott fumbled a punt and the next play Brewer was able to hit his man down to the two yard line. After two runs that resulted in nothing, Brewer ran out of the pocket and threw across the field to an open Ryan Malleck and suddenly Virginia Tech had the lead going into halftime. The Hokies scored 17 straight points and they took the momentum into the half.

But then Ohio State showed its grit when Jones found Braxton Miller for a 54 yard touchdown on the first drive after the break. The former quarterback, who led OSU to a perfect season two years ago, was able to grab a Jones pass and beat his defender for the score.

Many expected Virginia Tech to come back with Brewer leading the way but he had to leave the game with a collarbone injury after getting crushed by an Ohio State defender. With out Brewer, the Hokies turned to Brenden Motley, who is more of a running quarterback than a pocket passer.

With Virginia Tech struggling to move the ball, Ohio State hit the dagger. Braxton Miller took the ball on a direct snap, rounded the corner and spun away from two Hokie defenders and was off to the races. The move was almost video game-like as Miller completed his perfect debut at a new position.

Jones added a rushing touchdown to make it 35-17 and add to the Hokies misery. J.T. Barrett, who began the game as the second-string quarterback, later entered the matchup and added a touchdown pass to Michael Thomas, who burned Kendall Fuller on a great double move.

Ohio State will face Hawaii next week, with the likes of Joey Bosa back as they look to lead the pack in the National Title race.
