California came in firing early, as well as often as Jared Goff completed 24 of 32 passes for over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. All three touchdowns went to wide receiver Kevin Lawler. Lawler added 69 receiving yards.

Although it could be considered a "garbage win" Cal will take anything they can get. Stanford lost, Colorado lost, and Washington lost, so a win is crucial no matter who the opponent is. With Sonny Dykes now having the program to himself for a couple of years, things are starting to move in the right direction for the Golden Bears.

"The sign of a good defensive football team is when they can create havoc," Dykes said. "Our guys are running to the football, they're creating turnovers. They're playing opportunistic football. When the ball was in the air, our guys made plays on the ball."

The Cal defense was electric in today's matchup. Last year, the team gave up 40 points a game and ranked last in the Pac-12 defensively. All the talk is about Goff, but the Cal defense is finally healthy. Last season Cal's defense was absolutely atrocious. They had to convert wide receivers to the defensive side of the ball, and struggled to keep anyone healthy. This year, everyone going into the season is healthy and ready to roll. This may not make them a great defensive team but we can finlly see what they can do as a squad. Early on, the defense had success. Cam Walker took back an INT for touchdown which was the first in Cal HC Sonny Dykes tenure in Berkeley.

"Hopefully it's just the first step of our defense getting on the same level as our offense nationally," Walker said. "We've been talked bad about since I've been here the past three years. It's finally time to get rid of that."

The game was over without even a half of play between the teams. Cal went up to a booming 35-0 lead in the first quarter and never really looked back.

"We knew coming in that we had to play flawless and we also had to take advantage of their mistakes, too," Grambling coach Broderick Fobbs said. "We did neither. And anytime you do neither then you get what you saw."

Goff looked sharp, and at one point only had 4 incompletions, 1 was an interception, but all the throws were either dropped or tipped.

"In almost all facets, except for those two plays, we were pretty sharp on every play," Goff said. "You just want to be as sharp as you can."

Cal will play another home game against San Diego State next week, and if they can roll into Texas 2-0 then they have a solid chance of winning that one, too. This team is different from last year, and it's clear. How far can they go this season? Who knows, but the golden Bears are no easy match.
