Cole Netten's 42 yard field goal with two seconds left ended up giving Iowa State a crucial victory over in-state rival Iowa 20-17. Iowa State entered the game 0-2, but fought hard even after falling behind 14-3 in the second quarter.

In a fast moving first quarter, neither team moved the ball far on their first possession. However, Iowa used a long, drawn out drive to get the first points of the game. The Hawkeyes went 55 yards in 16 plays and took 7:54 off the game clock to go up 7-0 on Mark Weisman's 1 yard touchdown run.

Iowa State had a solid drive of their own, though it only ended with a 47 yard field goal from Cole Netten to make it a 7-3 Iowa lead. Both teams then traded punts before Iowa would punch in another touchdown.

A 10 play, 61 yard drive was capped off when Jake Rudock ran in from 5 yards out on the option keeper. It was a 14-3 lead for Iowa, but they would struggle to score after that.

The Cyclones had a great response by driving all the way down to the 2 yard line. However, DeVondrick Nealy was going in for a touchdown, but was hit by Quinton Alston and fumbled. The ball was recovered by Greg Mabin for a touchback and the threat dissipated for the Cyclones.

Iowa State caught a break early in the third quarter when T.J. Mutcherson intercepted Rudock's pass and brought it back to the Iowa 32. The Cyclones drove down to the Iowa one yard line where they were faced with a fourth and goal. They decided to go for and Sam B. Richardon's 1 yard pass produced an acrobatic diving catch from E.J. Bibbs to prevent the ball from hitting the turf. Iowa State was back in the game only down 14-10.

Iowa continued to pound the Cyclone defense, but it did not lead to any points. Iowa State eventually got the lead for the first time when Richardson hit Nealy on the wheel route for a 27 yard touchdown. The Cyclones led 17-14 with half a quarter remaining.

Needing a field goal, Iowa went down the field and got just that from Marshall Koehn with a 44 yard field goal.

Iowa State got the ball back with over 4 minutes remaining and made sure Iowa had virtually no chance of scoring. The Cyclones went 51 yards in 11 plays, taking off 4:06. It ended on fourth and one from the Iowa 24 yard line. There, Netten hit the 42 yard field goal to give them the Cy-Hawk Trophy.
