LSU looked like they would struggle to make it a competitive game early in the third quarter, but they slowly ground away at Wisconsin's 17-point lead to win 28-24.

After forcing an LSU punt on their first drive, Wisconsin got two big plays to reach the end zone. First, Melvin Gordon had a 20 yard run and then Reggie Love ran in for a 45 yard touchdown on Wisconsin's patented jet sweep. It got better for the Badgers.

After another LSU punt, Wisconsin got to the LSU 33 but had to settle for a field goal. Brazilian Rafael Gaglianone crushed the 51 yard field goal attempt to give the Badgers a 10-0 lead.

LSU had an answer when Anthony Jennings hit Travin Dural for an 80 yard touchdown, as Dural ran away from the Wisconsin secondary.

Wisconsin got another opportunity for points when Travis Dickson fumbled at his own 31 and the ball was recovered by Joe Schobert. The short field allowed for a dose of Melvin Gordon and Corey Clement, which ended with Melvin Gordon's burst of speed and flying into the end zone from 14 yards out. Wisconsin would go into halftime with a 17-7 lead.

Wisconsin started the third quarter in the same manner they played in the first half: running the ball down LSU's throat. Melvin Gordon ran for 63 yards on the first play from scrimmage. Corey Clement converted the fourth and 1 on LSU's 3 yard line and then he finished off the drive with a 2 run score. Wisconsin led 24-7 and everything seemed to be in their favor. Those 7 points would turn out to be the Badgers final points of the contest.

LSU's next two drives ended in field goals from Colby Delahoussaye from 30 and 47 yards out, respectively. That cut the lead to 24-13 and another three-and-out by the Badgers gave the Tigers the ball at their own 41 yard line.

Anthony Jennings found his confidence on the first drive of the fourth quarter. He found Travin Dural for 27 yards to the Badgers' 25 yard line. Then he threw a laser strike to John Diarse on third and 20. Diarse broke four tackles from Wisconsin players and sprinted into the end zone. Jennings completed an easy and wide open pass to Trey Quinn for the two-point conversion. Just like that, LSU was within three points at 24-21.

Wisconsin's fall continued when Tanner McEvoy threw a poor pass on a deep route, which was intercepted by Jalen Mills. Three straight runs by LSU culminated in a 28 yard touchdown run by Kenny Hilliard to give LSU the 28-24 lead.

Wisconsin had a tepid response on the next drive. They reached their own 48 yard line, but a third and 10 pass from McEvoy was intercepted by Ronald Martin. Wisconsin forced a punt was unable to move the ball and gave the ball back to LSU. The Tigers continued to pound the decimated Wisconsin defensive line, which resulted in LSU converting a third and three to allow them to run out the clock.

The downfall of Wisconsin came when injuries occurred to defensive lineman Konrad Zagzebski in the first quarter and Warren Herring in the third quarter. The unit was already short on depth and those two were starters. It left a glaring weakness, which LSU attacked to perfection.

Anthony Jennings finished the game with 238 yards and 2 touchdowns on 9 of 21 passing. Unsurprisingly, Travin Dural had 151 receiving yards and a touchdown on 3 catches. He was constantly burning the Badgers' secondary. John Diarse had 2 catches for 47 yards and a touchdown.

Kenny Hilliard had a good game on the ground with 110 yards rushing and a touchdown on 18 carries. Highly touted Leonard Fournette only ran for 18 yards on 8 carries, which was a less than stellar debut.

This game spoke more about Wisconsin's issues. Melvin Gordon had an excellent game in the first half and finished the game with 140 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. He was conspicuously absent in the second half, as Corey Clement got the lion's share of the carries. Clement finished the game with 45 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

Tanner McEvoy threw for only 50 yards during the entire game. He also threw 2 interceptions on 8 of 24 passing. McEvoy added 40 rushing yards as well. The leading receiver was Alex Erickson with 3 catches for 33 yards.

The Badgers can work on their passing game next week against Western Illinois back home in Madison, Wisconsin. LSU will welcome Sam Houston State to Death Valley next Saturday.
