The Arizona State Sun Devils started their 2014 season off with a bang, with a 45-14 blowout victory over the Weber State Wildcats. It took quarterback Taylor Kelly and the offense a few possessions to get into the flow of things just like in last seasons season opener. But the first touchdown of the year was a dandy that came on a crossing route from Gary Chambers, which completely fooled the defense and allowed him to walk right into the end zone to make it 10-0.

It was clear from the very first possession that wide receiver Jaelen Strong had stood by his word and put in all the dedicated work in the offseason to take his play to the next level. Strong showed an extremely explosive first step and his usually fantastic ball skills. He finished the night with ten receptions and 143 yards.

The other offensive stars, Kelly, a senior, and running back D.J. Foster, both had great outings as well. Kelly was 18 for 27 with 237 yards and a touchdown. D.J. Foster was perhaps the most impressive of the Sun Devils. Foster, like Strong, put in rigorous workouts during the offseason and put on 20 pounds in attempt to become a more durable back. His plan seemed to be working Thursday night, as he had 15 carries for 147 yards and three touchdowns. Foster had an impressive 57 yard touchdown run early in the third quarter that it sure to make the sports show highlight packages.

The most pivotal thing that can be taken away from the victory was the performance of the ASU defense. Although they are a very young group and lack collegiate experience, the Sun Devils were flying all over the field with immaculate speed. End defenders were disruptive in the back field all night, which will be a key to a successful year in the Pac-12 South. The next game for Arizona State is September 6 at New Mexico.
