Running back Joe Mixon has been suspended by the University of Oklahoma on Monday. The University released the following statement.

“Today President David Boren accepted the recommendation of the Director of Athletics and the Head Football Coach to suspend Joe Mixon from the football team for the entire season. He will be excluded from all team activities, including being removed from the team roster. With appropriate conditions, he will be permitted to continue as a student, eligible for financial aid.”

Vice President for Athletics Joe Castiglione and head coach Bob Stoops said, “As the university has demonstrated in the past, we are committed to winning the right way. As an example to others, OU sets the highest possible standards for its student athletes, coaches and staff.”

Mixon was charged with a misdemeanor on Friday after allegedly punching a woman in the face back in July. Mixon was originally suspended at the end of July, but was not charged with a crime at the time. Mixon was suspended from the team while he was under investigation for an alleged assault. He is alleged to have punched a woman in the face causing her to be knocked unconscious for at least 20 seconds.

Mixon becomes the second Sooner suspended for the 2014 season. Linebacker Frank Shannon was also suspended after allegations of a sexual assault surfaced. However, Shannon is able to practice with the team while Mixon is not.
