The 2015 NBA Draft is soon approaching and everybody is talking about players and all of their upside, Well today, it is time to look at what players are most likely to flop in the NBA.

Over the past years, there have been many players that have been busts in the NBA but what do they all have in common. Well, when looking at some of the most noticeable busts, they share a few traits: a low steal percentage, low rebounding percentage, low assist percentage, and low pure point rating. Some of these stats are more focused on one percentage than another, but they still help in determining which players will bust.

Now, it is time to examine the top twenty prospects in the 2015 NBA Draft class and see which of these players will busts, and also which players will excel. You can view the whole table of stats and players by clicking here.

Our first red flag of the draft is pretty high up on big boards: Jahlil Okafor. Okafor is considered to be one of the best prospects in the draft, but upon closer examination, he actually might not be that great of a prospect. Okafor has a low steal percentage (under 2%) of 1.52% and a low assist percentage (under 10%) of 9.43%, which is very similar to former bust, Hasheem Thabeet. Whoever does wind up with Okafor may not be getting what they are expecting to get.

The next red flag is Kristaps Porzingis, a player that has been climbing draft boards with his performances in workouts. Porzingis is just an average player in steal percentage and rebounding percentage, but he has a low assist percentage at 5.21%. Porzingis’ stats are very similar to those of Al-Farouq Aminu, which does not bode well for the team that selects him.

Moving down the red flag list out of these prospects, we find Myles Turner. Turner has a low steal percentage at 0.83% and a low assist percentage at 6.25%. Turner’s numbers are eerily close to one of the biggest busts of all time, Greg Oden. If Turner does end up to be like Oden, then Turner’s tenure in the NBA could be short.

Our final red flag prospect on the list is Trey Lyles. Lyles is the final of the four Kentucky prospects in the top twenty and the second one in the red flag list. Lyles has a low steal percentage of 1.41% and a low assist percentage of 9.15%. Lyles numbers are similar to Hasheem Thabeet (just like Jahlil Okafor). Lyles will need to put in hard work and adapt his style of play to succeed in the next level.

There are more players who show signs of concern, but are not as alarming as the players in the red flag category. These players include Mario Hezonja, Frank Kaminsky, Devin Booker, and Kevon Looney. These players show signs of concern in the above-mentioned area but no alarming red flags.

With these stats, there are also ways to detect hidden gems in the draft class. Players who have exceptionally high stats in these areas are usually more likely to succeed in the NBA. Out of the top twenty prospects in this draft class, there are two hidden gems who have numbers that mirror those of players who are current all-stars in the NBA: D’Angelo Russell and Cameron Payne.

Russell has high numbers in assist percentage (30.28%) and pure point rating (1.27) which are close to those of James Harden. While Russell is more of a combo guard and Harden is purely a shooting guard, Russell’s numbers are still close to Harden’s and the two have similar play styles.

Now looking at Payne, he excels in steal percentage (3.26%), assist percentage (37.08%), and pure point rating (2.84) and his numbers are almost identical to those of Chris Paul. While Payne may have had some inflation due to playing weaker opponents at Murray State, he still did incredibly well and his numbers show he has signs of greatness in him.

With the NBA Draft coming up on Thursday and the NBA season starting in late October, we will have to wait and see where the prospects end up going and if they can succeed in the NBA or become busts.
