The Carlos Boozer era is officially over in Chicago. The Bulls have used their amnesty provision to wipe Boozer’s $16.8 million contract off their payroll, according to Sam Smith of Bulls.com.

Only teams with at least $1.44 million in cap room are now allowed to blind bid on Boozer until he clears amnesty waivers in two days. After that, any team can sign him.

Even though Boozer’s contract is off the books, the Bulls will still have to pay him what he is owed. However, with the extra cap room, the Bulls can now officially sign Pau Gasol, Nikola Mirotic, and Kirk Hinrich.

Carlos Boozer spent four years with the Chicago Bulls where he averaged 15.5 points and 9.0 rebounds. He has also played for the Utah Jazz and Cleveland Cavaliers.

Boozer, 32, was the 35th overall pick by the Cavaliers in 2002. The 12-year veteran is still a solid rebounder and terrific mid-range shooter. He also excels in pick and roll situations. He would be a great pickup for a contending team and does not figure to be out of work for too long.

The Charlotte Hornets and Atlanta Hawks are considered two early candidates to make a bid on Boozer. The Los Angeles Lakers may also have interest. The Miami Heat does not have the cap space to make a bid, but would likely pursue him if Boozer clears waivers.

In addition to Boozer, the Chicago Bulls also waived Lou Amundson, Mike James, and Ronnie Brewer.
