Just a day after the medical records for the likes of Simone Biles and The Williams’ sisters were leaked, showing the use of Therapeutic Use Exemptions for these athletes, Russian hackers have released more leaked documents which depict TUE use.
Several high profile names have had their medical records leaked this time around, with American Rio 2016 gold medalists Michelle Carter and Bethanie-Mattek Sands, as well as two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, amongst those who have had their use of TUE’s released into the public domain.
As well as several more Americans having their medical data released, the latest leak also seems to target Great Britain, with cyclists Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome, and golfer Charley Hull, amongst those who have been targeted. Several Germans have also been targeted.
Several Americans have medical data released
The latest release by Fancy Bears has leaked more records than their first leak a few days ago, with several American stars, including some who medaled at Rio 2016, being targeted.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who won Mixed Doubles gold in Rio with Jack Sock, has had several separate TUE’s for hydrocortisone (including one which is ongoing), which can be used to treat allergies, as well as one for prasterone, whilst shot put champion Michelle Carter has had TUE’s for glucocorticoids and breo ellipta.
Basketball star Brittney Griner has an exemption for lisdexamfetamine, whilst Aquatics stars Kathleen Baker (who has received several TUE’s), John Conger, Sam Dorman, and Mcquin Baron has also all had data released which show that they have used or are using TUE’s.
Furthermore, athlete Deanna Price, fencer Dagmara Wozniak, and wrestler Tervel Ivaylov Dlagnev have also had medical records released.
German, British sports stars also targeted
Britain and Germany, who have been strong critics of the doping crisis surrounding Russia, have had five sportspeople each targeted.
British Cyclists Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggins, both Tour de France champions and medalists in Rio, have been revealed to have had TUE’s, Froome for prednisolone and Wiggins for drugs such as salbutamol and triamcinolone acetonide; both men have spoken about their asthma, which all the drugs they have been given permission to use can treat.
Salbutamol has also been prescribed to British golfer Charley Hull, who has an exemption for the drug until 2020, whilst bobsledder Heather Fisher and rower Sam Townsend have also had the exemptions.
German discus thrower Robert Harting, a former Olympic champion, has had two exemptions for the use of dexamethasone, whilst the recently-retired Christina Obergfoll had a TUE in place back in 2008 for the same drug, which can be used for allergy or asthma treatment.
Furthermore, swimmers Franziska Henke and Christian Reichert has had TUE’s for salbutamol, whilst another swimmer, Christian Von Lehm, has had exemptions for formoterol and glucocorticoids.
Other names leaked
The most notable of the other names leaked is former tennis world number two Petra Kvitova; the Czech has received TUE’s for albuterol and formoterol, which can be used to treat asthma, a condition Kvitova does suffer from.
Danish swimmer Pernille Blume, who won gold in Rio, currently has a TUE in place for terbutaline, whilst Romanian rower Roxanna Cogeanu, Russian boxer Misha Aloyan, and Polish rower Natalia Madaj also having medical data released.
