The Great British pair of Helen Glover and Heather Stanning won the final and retained their gold medal from London 2012.

The pair came into the Olympics having been unbeaten since 2011 and were the team to beat.

In the heats, they were given a slight scare by the Danish pair who eventually finished 0.16 seconds behind the champions.

The British pair had the fastest team of all the teams coming into the final. Having won their semifinal, they were given lane three with the second fastest team Denmark in four.

The USA who came behind Great Britain in their semifinal race were in lane five. South Africa was given lane one and Spain lane six as both teams finished third in their semifinals.

Glover and Stanning dominate

Great Britain's Glover and Stanning started the race looking to extend their unbeaten record. In the opening 100 to 200m, the British came out hard, pounding, laying their mark on the final. In the lane next to the New Zealand pair had more races coming into the final with the two racing in the women's eight.

At the 500m mark, the British were comfortably in the lead. They were up by 1.77 seconds on the second place team of Felice Mueller and Grace Luczak of the USA in second. In third Denmark were 2.01 seconds of the leader and only realistically could challenge the USA who was closest to them.

As they went through the 750m mark, Glover and Stanning had pushed on even more and were clear of the rest of the field. In second still were the USA and Denmark in third. The New Zealand pair who would have been Great Britain's fiercest rivals, were down in fourth place trying to catch Denmark and USA.

At the 1000m checkpoint, Great Britain opened up a 3.58 second lead on Denmark who had overtaken the USA. The New Zealander's were slowly starting to push on and challenge the USA and Danish pairs.

By the 1500m mark, Glover and Stanning had all but sealed the gold medal. However, the silver and bronze positions were still up for grabs. Denmark had crossed the mark ahead of New Zealand. But in the last 500m, Rebecca Scown and Genevieve Behrent pushed on to claim silver ahead of Denmark who took the bronze medal. The USA pair faded away in fourth with South Africa fifth, Spain sixth, China seventh and Germany in the eighth position.
