After defeating John Cena at Money in the Bank, thanks to The Club, it has been reported that AJ Styles and Cena would square off again. It was announced on Monday Night Raw that the pair will be in action against each other at WWE Battleground, but it won’t be a singles match.
Cena will join a team alongside the upstart tag team Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady while Styles will join his fellow members of The Club, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows.
That isn’t likely to be the last time Cena and Styles get into the ring with each other. According to the Wrestling Observer Radio, there are plans in place for a match to take place at SummerSlam between Cena and Styles.
It is also being reported that the pair could square off for the SmackDown World Championship, should they both be drafted to SmackDown during the upcoming WWE Draft. This is something that has been rumoured for a number of weeks and may have some credibility.
Draft night should be exciting and will be a must watch event, just to see how the future landscape of the WWE unfolds.
Cena - Styles, Match of the Year?
At Money in the Bank, Cena and Styles put on a match of the year contender. With it being a dream match, two icons of two different brands colliding, it could have very easily been a disappointment, but it wasn’t.
Styles had all the counters to Cena’s moves and Big Match John looked lost for the first time in a number of years. This gives Styles legitimacy in the WWE, even if the match did end controversially.
Another match between the pair isn’t likely to disappoint.
Potential plans for Styles after Cena?
Cena - Styles is a storyline the WWE could do for a number of months but if it wants SmackDown to provide competition for Monday Night Raw, they will have to change the storylines on a regular basis.
That means moving Cena and Styles away from each other.
If they compete for the SmackDown championship, it’s likely that the WWE keeps them together for a rematch at a pay-per-view or a WWE Network event but if that doesn’t happen, well they can go their separate ways.
