The St. Paul Saints had a chance to sweep the Winnipeg Goldeyes and lower their magic number to clinch the American Association North division title to just two with 26 games left in the season. The Saints sent Robert Coe to the mound, who just came off a near no-hitter against the Lincoln Saltdogs. The Goldeyes countered with right-hander Matt Jackson.

The two pitchers exchanged no-hit innings in the first, before Winnipeg got their first hit of the night in the second inning when Brad Boyer singled to center fielder Alonzo Harris with two outs. Winnipeg would not score, however, as Coe got Luis Allen to ground out to Dan Kaczrowski to end the inning.

The Saints finally got their first hit of the game in the fourth inning when Vinny DiFazio lined a base hit to left field with one out. The hit moved DiFazio's hit streak to 10 straight games. Angelo Songco then hit a single to the shortstop that advanced DiFazio to second. Both runners advanced when Jackson threw a wild pitch that got through catcher Ryan Babineau. Mike Kvasnicka then popped out to the shortstop Casio Grider for the second out of the inning. That brought up Joey Paciorek, who drew a walk to load the bases for Ryan Lashley. He took a 3-2 pitch from Jackson and blasted it to the center field wall to score all three runners, giving the Saints a 3-0 lead.

The teams then exchanged zeroes until the Winnipeg seventh inning when Reggie Abercrombie drew a two-out walk. He then scored when Brad Boyer hit a double to center field. Luis Allen then walked, then both Allen and Boyer moved up a base when Coe threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt. Coe would recover to get Tillman Pugh to pop out for the final out of the inning.

The Saints extended their lead in their half of the seventh when Lashley led off with a single to center field. He then advanced to second base when Nikorak laid down a sacrifice bunt. Anthony Phillips then singled to left field to put runners on the corners for Harris, who hit a bases clearing double down the left field line to extend the Saints lead to 5-1. Kaczrowski would follow with a base hit to center field, then advanced to second base when Abercrombie misplayed the ball. That allowed Harris to score and give the Saints a five run lead.

Coe would depart the game with one out in the eighth inning after only allowing two hits and one earned run in favor of Mike Zouzalik, who got a strikeout of Grider and a lineout of Haerther to end the inning. The Saints got one run in their half of the eighth when Kvasnicka led off the game with a ground rule double to center field. He advanced to third when Paciorek grounded out to the shortstop, then he scored when Lashley hit a sacrifice fly to the center fielder to bump up the Saints lead to 7-1.

In the ninth, the Saints brought Alex Sogard to the mound, who was looking to get the final three outs to lower the Saints magic number to two. The first batter he faced was Josh Mazzola, who popped out to the second baseman for the first out. Next was Reggie Abercrombie, who hit a single to center field. Brad Boyer then hit into a double play to end the game.

The win lengthened the gap between the two teams in the North division, as well as lowering the Saints magic number to clinch the division to two. The Saints now head to Sioux City, Iowa for a matchup with the second best team in the American Association.
