The Portland Sea Dogs are in the last place in the Double-A Eastern League, possessing a record of 39-63 after Sunday’s game. However, they did not play like a last-place squad throughout their seven-game homestand against the Trenton Thunder and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

Fueled by a three-run fifth inning, the Sea Dogs defeated the Fisher Cats 7-2 to cap an impressive four-game sweep and end a spectacular 6-1 homestand at Hadlock Field, their best home stand of the year. The sweep started with a crazy 4-3 victory on Thursday, in which Portland scored four times in the ninth to win it, and concluded with Sunday’s win.

Portland received multiple hits from center fielder Manuel Margot, second baseman Carlos Asuaje, catcher Tim Roberson, and third baseman Mike Miller.

Portland got the scoring started with single runs in the second and third innings. Henry Ramos doubled with one out and came around to score on an RBI single from David Chester. Margot led off the third inning with a single, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from first baseman Sam Travis.

New Hampshire came back to tie the game with single runs of their own in the fourth and fifth frames. Ryan Schimpf, who led the Fisher Cats with three hits, blasted a 403-foot bomb to left center field with one out in the fourth. Roemon Fields tied the game in the fifth with an RBI single off of Portland starter Justin Haley (W, 5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 SO, 85 pitches). However, Portland responded swiftly with Aneury Tavarez leading off the bottom half of the fifth inning with a 380-foot shot to right field to push Portland back in front 3-2.

Asuaje then poked a one-out single and moved to second base when Travis reached on an error. Asuaje stole third and scored on Roberson’s RBI single to right field. The scoring in the fifth was completed when Travis came around to score on Tzu Wei-Lin’s sacrifice fly.

The Sea Dogs added two runs in the sixth to put the game away. Margot slammed an RBI triple to right-center field to score Chester with one out in the sixth inning, and Margot then scored on the RBI ground out by Asuaje. That extended the lead to 7-2, which was more than enough thanks to the shutdown relief provided by former starter Heri Quevedo and Jorge Marban.

Quevedo allowed one hit and struck out four over two shutout innings, and Marban, whose ERA decreased to a miniscule 0.31, fired two shutout frames, allowing two hits and walking one.

Portland heads to Trenton to take on the Thunder in a three-game set with southpaw Danny Rosenbaum taking the mound. They return to Hadlock Field on Thursday to face the Harrisburg Senators in their only visit to Hadlock in 2015.
