The Arizona Diamondbacks purchased the contract of right-handed Dominican hurler Gabriel Perez from the New Jersey Jackels of the Can-Am League on Thursday. He became the third Can-Am League player to be sold to an organization in Major League Baseball this season. Ironically, all three players were sold to the Diamondbacks. Right-handed pitcher Nick Sarianides of the Trois-Rivieres Aigles and infielder Steve Nyisztor of the Rockland Boulders were also sold to Arizona.

Perez, 23, was originally signed by the Los Angeles Angels back in January of 2009 as an amateur costless agent. In his first season in the Angels organization, he went 8-2 with a 2.22 ERA in 89 1/3 innings pitched (14 starts) in the Dominican Summer League. He also had 70 strikeouts and walked 27 batters in his 2009 season. The following year, he went 5-4 with a 2.85 ERA in 66 1/3 innings (12 starts). He punched out 67 batters in 2010 and walked just 18 that year.

Perez's 2011 season was without question the best season of his professional baseball career. He went 10-1 in 14 starts and posted an impressive 1.47 ERA in 73 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out 76 batters, walked 28 and led the DSL Angels to the 2011 DSL Championship.

After his stellar 2011 campaign, Perez was promoted to the Angels' Rookie squad -- the Orem Owlz. In 15 starts for the Owlz in 2012, Perez went 8-1 and sported a 5.06 ERA in 80 innings pitched. He also struck out 78 batters and walked 25 that season.

Perez missed all of last season with an injury and was released by the Angels this past March. He signed with the New Jersey Jackels of the Can-Am League following his release from the Angels.

In 13 starts for the Jackels this season, Perez has gone 8-5 with a 4.01 ERA in 74 innings pitched. He has struck out 54 batters and has walked 38 this season.

Perez's pitching repertoire features a power fastball, a very polished change-up and a slider. His composure on and off the mound has really impressed scouts. Despite the fact that he gets into jams, he is able to wiggle out of them with relative ease. He isn't easily rattled when he's on the mound, and that's something that scouts believe will help him tremendously as he makes an attempt to move up through the minors.

Perez is expected to be assigned to one of Arizona's Rookie ball affiliates.
