Number four seed and former French Open champion Roger Federer is through to the third round of Roland Garros 2014 after a 6-3 6-4 6-4 win over Diego Sebastian Schwartzman.

Despite a valiant effort by the young Argentine, one that he shouldn't be at all ashamed of in his first grand slam main draw event, Federer powered through using all of his clay-court skill to his advantage in order to grab the victory.

Schwartzman, 21, started off really well breaking to take a *2-1 lead over the 17 time grand slam champion but, like champions do, Federer broke back immediately. There were some nervy moments for the 2009 champion as Schwartzman utilised his compact stature, and used his speed to stay in rallies. As champions do, Federer found a way to pull through in the end.

Before today, its fair to say that not many people outside those who follow the Challenger tour knew Diego Sebastian Schwartzman, but the way he played today will have won him a fair few fans. The way he plays his game bodes well for the future.

Federer had this to say about his opponent "I always felt he had a little bit of an upper hand from the baseline. I feel he was doing a really good job being aggressive and making good plays. Clearly because of his height he doesn't have the biggest serve, and that kept me sometimes in two minds. But I think he handled the conditions really well.

I can see why he's ranked where he is and why he probably is going to move up in the rankings. He's very steady, very fast. He's got some good qualities, you know. It's just a matter for him to be really fit and continue what he's doing, you know, working hard. "

At just 21, the youngster from Buenos Aires has a long way to go in his development but he definitely has promise for the future and will undoubtedly be featuring regularly on the main tour for years to come.

Federer went on to comment about how he feels "I feel good. I mean, physically I'm fit and the two first rounds were really okay. I didn't lose any of my energy. I had two days off, so I'm really relaxed as far as this is concerned."

Federer's victory today makes him the first player to win at least 60 matches at every grand slam.

He will now play Dmitry Tursunov in the third round as he defeated American Sam Querrey 6-4 7-5 6-1.

Federer is 4-0 in the head-to-head versus the Russian with the last match being in Indian Wells this year which ended in a 7-6(7) 7-6(2) victory for the Swiss.
