Monday night could not have been a better example about why the Toronto Blue Jays decided to trade for ace David Price at the deadline. With the New York Yankees coming into town looking to gain back some games in the AL East, Price was the perfect man to have on the hill.

Rogers Centre in Toronto was filled to the brim and it was a great atmosphere north of the border for some pennant race baseball.

With the crowd into it from the beginning, the Blue Jays offense gave them something to cheer about right off of the bat as they jumped all over Yankees starter Adam Warren in the first inning.

Jose Bautista got it started with an RBI single scoring Ben Revere to open the scoring for Toronto. With Edwin Encarnacion up next, he was able to do his job as he grounded out to shortstop which let Josh Donaldson scamper in from third base. Finally, Justin Smoak ripped an RBI double over the head of right fielder Carlos Beltran to put his team up 3-0.

That was all Blue Jays starter David Price needed as he had one of his best outings as a Blue Jay in 2015. He went seven innings shutout giving up just two hits while striking out seven and walking one. He ran into some trouble as he loaded the bases in the third, but after he got out of that jam, he retired 14 straight batters until his night was over.

As for aforementioned Yankees starter Adam Warren, he could only last 3.1 innings giving up three runs on five hits while striking out five and walking one. He only threw 82 pitches, but New York manager Joe Girardi had to make a switch with the order turning over to try to keep the game within striking distance.

Once Price's night was over for the Blue Jays, the Yankees immediately cracked the scoreboard for the first time when Jacoby Ellsbury scored Didi Gregorius behind an RBI single to center. That run was charged to Aaron Sanchez.

After that single by Ellsbury with no outs given up by Brett Cecil who relieved Sanchez, Cecil came back to strikeout three straight Yankees in Brett Gardner, Alex Rodriguez, and Brian McCann with runners on first and second to escape the jam.

Then in the ninth inning, there was finally a save situation for Toronto closer Roberto Osuna who got the first two outs easy, but then gave up a solo home run to Greg Bird to make it 4-2. He was then able to retire Didi Gregorius to end the ballgame and secure the win for the Blue Jays.

Jose Bautista and Ben Revere both tallied two hits in this one for the Blue Jays while Jacoby Ellsbury had two base knocks for the Yankees.

With the win, Toronto extended their lead in the AL East to 3.5 games over the Yankees.

Game two of the series continues Tuesday in Toronto as rookie Luis Severino will take the hill for New York and will be opposed by Marco Estrada for the Blue Jays.
