The Chicago Cubs have been the hottest team in baseball as of late and Wednesday were trying to wrap up a sweep of baseball's best team in the St. Louis Cardinals , while aiming for their sixth-straight victory.

The Cubs got the bats out again as they pounded out 11 hits, but they were led by their ace on the mound in Jon Lester. Lester went seven innings giving up just one run on two hits, while striking out seven and walking one. Lester's two hits that he gave up to Matt Carpenter and Jason Heyward came in the first inning, but from then on pitched six innings of no-hit ball while allowing just one base runner; a walk to Yadier Molina in the fifth. In addition to giving up two hits, Lester got a hit of his own, his second career hit that raised his average to .038.

The runs started right off the bat as the Cubs snagged two runs in the first inning behind a two-out RBI double by Anthony Rizzo, which was followed by a ground-rule double from Tommy La Stella to make it 2-0.

After Carpenter tripled to lead off the first for St. Louis, Heyward came to the plate and smashed an RBI single up the middle to score Carpenter and cut into the Cubs' lead to make it 2-1. Besides that, the Cardinals offense was stymied by Lester, but once his day was over they started to threaten again.

The Cubs did grab one more run in the second off of Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez, as Dexter Fowler singled to center scoring Addison Russell to make it 3-1 Cubs.

Martinez had a bit of a rough outing for St. Louis as he lasted just five innings giving up three runs on 10 hits, but he did strike out 10 while walking just one. He did keep his team within striking distance, but the Cardinals had to wait until the eighth to flex their muscle.

In the eighth inning, the Cubs bullpen reverted back to their shaky state and gave up some hits that turned into runs. Pedro Strop got an out, but then walked Mark Reynolds and gave up a single to Brandon Moss. Strop was then relieved by the left-hander Clayton Richard who gave up an RBI single to Matt Carpenter to make it 3-2. Richard couldn't get the out so Cubs manager Joe Maddon turned to Fernando Rodney to get them out of the jam, but that was to no avail as Stephen Piscotty hit a two-RBI double to clear the bases and put the Cardinals ahead, 4-3.

Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal would come on in the ninth to close things down, and did just that as St. Louis avoided the sweep at the hands of the Cubs and ended Chicago's five-game win streak.

Matt Carpenter led the Cardinals attack Wednesday going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Javier Baez and Addison Russell both tallied two hits for the Cubs as St. Louis won their 88th game of the year.

Chicago continues their road trip Thursday as they stop in Philadelphia for a series with the Phillies, and Cy Young candidate Jake Arrieta (18-6, 2.03 ERA) will take the hill for the Cubs.

As for St. Louis, they head up to Cincinnati to face the Reds with Jaime Garcia  (8-4, 1.89 ERA) getting the start for the Cardinals.
