The New York Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 this afternoon at the Rogers Center in Toronto, Ontario. With the loss, Yankees rookie starter Luis Severino falls to 0-2, while Jays starter Drew Hutchinson improves to 12-2.

With the win the Blue Jays come to within half a game of tying the Yankees for first place in the AL East. The Yankees fall to 64-52 and 32-31 on the road. The Blue Jays improve to 65-54 and 40-23 at home on the season. There was a capacity crowd of 46,792 at the Rogers Center to witness the Jays avoiding the sweep in this one.

Prior to the game, the 1985 Toronto Blue Jays' AL East Championship team was honored with players such as Jesse Barfield and George Bell in attendance.

In the bottom of the third with two outs, Troy Tulowtizki hit a fly ball to Carlos Beltran who lost it in the sun and it hit him in the side before rolling away from him. That would cost the Yankees, as one batter later Josh Donaldson put the Blue Jays up 1-0 with a single to right field. The hellish third inning continued for Severino, as the next batter Jose Bautista hit what would turn out to be a game-winning home run, his 28th of the year to make it 3-0.

Jacoby Ellsbury hit a long homer to right in the sixth inning, accounting for the only run of the game for the Yankees.

According to ESPN.com, in the New York Yankees locker room somebody wrote, "Cheer up everybody. We won the series. Still in first place.”

Carlos Beltran, the hero for the first two games of the series but was the goat of this game talked about his error by saying, “I lost it when it was getting close to me and I basically couldn't do anything. Unfortunately, it would have been a different story if I had caught that ball."

Joe Girardi talked about winning the series by saying, "I thought we did a good job coming in here and winning a tough series on the road."

According to Luis Severino, the pitch that Bautista took out of the park, “It was supposed to be a slider down. It stayed up and I paid for it."

The loss prevented the Yankees from getting back at the Jay’s for sweeping them at their place last week, and getting their first sweep in Toronto since 2003.

The Yankees begin a three-game set at Yankee Stadium with C.C. Sabathia going up against Kyle Gibson of the Minnesota Twins on Monday. On Tuesday the Jays get back in action against the Philadelphia Phillies in Philly, with R.A. Dickey going up against Aaron Nola
