In what could turn out as his final start in a Philadelphia Phillies (36-63) uniform, ace left-hander Cole Hamels has no-hit the very team for which he could possibly make his next start. Hamels has no-hit the Chicago Cubs (51-45), which represents the first time it has happened to the Cubs in the past 50 years. Hamels won the game 5-0

Here is Hamels's entire ninth inning, courtesy of MLB.com:

Hamels threw 129 pitches in accomplishing the feat. He issued two walks, both to Cubs lead-off man Dexter Fowler. Only one other Cub reached base: Anthony Rizzo, who reached on a fielder's choice in the first inning just one out after Fowler drew a lead-off walk. Hamels walked Fowler again in the sixth. Rizzo and Fowler each stole second base one time, but neither advanced any further.

Hamels got Kris Bryant to fly out to deep center field to end it. The ball looked like it had a chance to leave the yard, but Odubel Herrera made a diving catch at the warning track to end the game and complete the no-hitter for his teammate.

Herrera also saved the no-hitter in the bottom of the eighth with another incredible diving catch on the warning track in left-center field off the bat of Cubs catcher David Ross (video).

Hamels (W: 6-7, 3.64 ERA) finishes the game with a final line that reads 9 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BB, 13 K. He struck out Bryant and Chris Denorfia twice each, Jorge Soler three times, and six other Cubs once each. Hamels was also 1 for 3 with a double at the plate.

The Cubs were last no-hit on September 9, 1965 -- fifty years ago. In that game, Hall-of-Famer Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitched a perfect game and defeated the Cubs 1-0 in Los Angeles. The last no-hitter at Wrigley Field occurred on September 2, 1972, when the Cubs' Milt Pappas came within one out of a perfect game over the San Diego Padres but still completed the no-hitter after issuing a walk.

The last Cubs pitcher to throw a no-hitter was Carlos Zambrano, who pitched his at a neutral site -- Milwaukee's Miller Park -- against the Houston Astros on September 14, 2008.

Hamels pitched the Major Leagues' third no-hitter of 2015 as he joins the San Fracisco Giants' Chris Heston (June 9) and the Washington NationalsMax Scherzer (June 20) in turning the trick. It is the first no-hitter for the Phillies since Roy Halladay tossed two in 2010 -- one a perfect game on May 29 against the Florida Marlins and one on October 6 against the Cincinnati Reds during the postseason.

The Phillies scored their five runs on two plays. In the top of the third, Ryan Howard launched a three-run home run (17) into the center-field bleachers to give Hamels and the Phillies a 3-0 lead (video). In the eighth, Freddy Galvis popped a bloop double into shallow right to send Cody Asche to third. Rizzo's relay throw got past Bryant, allowing both runners to score on the Little League home run.

Cubs starter Jake Arrieta (L: 11-6, 2.61) had a quality start: 6 IP, 3 ER, 3 H, 8 K, 1 HR (Howard). It was Arrieta's first loss since June 16, a span of eight starts.

The Phillies go for the series sweep Sunday afternoon when they send Aaron Nola (0-1, 1.50) to the mound to take on Jason Hammel (5-4, 2.82). The game starts at 2:20 p.m. EDT.
