Thanks to an infield single, the New York Yankees saw their winning streak end at seven games as they fell to the Washington Nationals 5-4 in 11 innings.

The infield single came off the bat of Denard Span. With Tyler Moore on third and two outs in the top of the 11th, Span rolled one right up the middle. Second baseman Stephen Drew fielded it at the bag, but the throw across his body was late, allowing Span to reach and Moore to score the game-winning run. Moore had led off the inning with a base hit to left. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then to third on a ground ball to the right side.

Lost in the excitement of the extra-inning hit was Michael Taylor's opposite-field two-run home run (5) to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the eighth (video) off Jacob Lindgren (BS: 1), scoring Ian Desmond ahead of him.

Washington jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the third (Span RBI double) and fifth (Danny Espinosa home run, 8). New York then scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-2 lead, setting up Taylor's heroics.

In that seventh inning, the Yankees got single RBI's from four hitters: Brendan Ryan (triple), Brett Gardner (double), Alex Rodriguez (double), and Brian McCann (single). Ryan played his first game of the season after serving a long stint on the 60-day disabled list with a strained right calf.

Rodriguez now has 1,998 career RBI and 2,992 hits. His RBI total is either second or third all-time depending on consideration of Babe Ruth's total at 2,213 or 1,992. The RBI was not an official statistic for the first six years of Ruth's career (1914-1919).

Blake Treinan (W: 2-2, 4.31 ERA) picked up the win in relief. He pitched two innings, allowing only one hit and no runs while fanning two. Drew Storen (S: 19) got all three Yankees out in the 11th to close it out. Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez was charged with two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. He walked three and fanned five.

Chris Capuano (L: 0-4, 5.63) pitched two innings and took the loss. He allowed one run on two hits while striking out one. Starter Nathan Eovaldi was charged with three earned runs in seven innings while walking one and striking out four. He also allowed Espinosa's home run.

The teams split the two-game series. On Thursday, Washington travels to Miller Park to face the Milwaukee Brewers for four games while the Yankees get Thursday off. On Friday, the Yankees open a weekend series with the Baltimore Orioles in Camden Yards.
