Chris Young smashed a game-winning two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning, leading the New York Yankees to a 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals to close out Spring Training for both teams.

With pinch runner Nick Noonan on second, Young took a 2-1 fastball from Drew Storen into the flower bed right behind the left-field wall (3) to give the Yankees the lead they would not relinquish.

Noonan ran for Didi Gregorius, who doubled with one out. Gregorius was uncertain about starting on Opening Day because of recent injury, but it appears that he will begin the season as the Yankees' new shortstop as planned. He ended the spring with a .271 average.

The Yankees came into the inning trailing 3-2. They got those first two runs via Stephen Drew's two-run shot (3) in the fifth. Drew's blast scored Brian McCann, who doubled to lead off the inning. That shot was the first scoring of the Yankees' comeback.

Washington jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Ryan Zimmerman brought in Michael Taylor with a sacrifice fly. Wilson Ramos then singled home Yunel Escobar and Bryce Harper. Nathan Eovaldi got out of the jam without further damage.

David Carpenter (W: 2-0, 4.50 ERA) got the last out in the seventh to qualify for the win thanks to Young's blast. Dellin Betances (S: 1) allowed a hit and a walk but struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save. Betances figures to get the bulk of the closing duties, but Andrew Miller will also likely get his chances. Eovaldi pitched five innings, allowing three runs on four hits. He also walked three and struck out three.

Storen (L: 0-1. 6.00) got only one man out in the eighth, and he allowed Young's game-winner in blowing the save (1) and taking the loss. Doug Fister pitched as well as expected in his final spring start. He pitched six innings, allowing two runs (Drew's home run) on four hits. He walked no one and struck out three.

The regular season begins Monday, April 6. The Yankees will host the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday while Washington hosts the New York Mets on the same three days. Masahiro Tanaka will open for the Yankees, and Max Scherzer will get the ball Monday for Washington.
