Duke University right hander Michael Matuella's season is over as the junior right-hander has a torn ulnar collateral ligament and will undergo Tommy John surgery. ESPN.com's Keith Law was the first to report the injury.

Matuella was a consensus top pick in this year's MLB draft and was even discussed as the potential first overall pick.

Matuella joins a long list of young high profiled pitchers to undergo Tommy John, including last year's first overall pick Brady Aiken, who refused to sign with the Houston Astros last summer following the draft.

Matuella pitched in six games this season before going down with his injury. In those six games, he posted a 1-1 record with a 1.08 ERA with 24 strikeouts and 11 walks in 25.0 innings pitched. Throughout his entire career at Duke, he has posted a 6-7 record with a 2.85 ERA in 139 innings pitched.

With not being overused in his three years at Duke and not playing any Summer League baseball last season, the reason Matuella suffered the torn UCL is questioning as it occurs in most pitchers due to being overused.

It will be interesting to see how far the righty will fall in MLB mock drafts now due to his injury.
